Yes, once I'm on fibre, I'll be moving my servers into the house. The servers don't do a huge amount of uploading, but enough so that I'd notice if it were metered.

Hi guys, I will be building in a Telstra Velocity Estate with M and I have this strange feeling that they will charge us around 5k for a package. Our Electrical appointment is next week.
Just wondering is this something that needs to be installed during the construction stage or can I have my "smart wiring" setup after handover?
Im sure Id be looking at 3 tv points, 4-6 network connections and maybe 2 phone connections. And whatever else is needed such as HDMI or whatever (my partner knows what we need)
any advice would be great!

during construction unless you can get "conduits only" installed I would say you are getting ripped off big time even for that I wouldn't expect anyting over $2K- 2.5K all up...

Sounds expensive to me.
Argus have quoted us around 2k for 9 network/phone points, 2 foxtel HD points, 2 std foxtel points, 4 TV points.

Foxtel HD, std foxtel and TV points are all the same plugs and are wired to the same splitter. So make sure they aren't charging you any extra to state HD on there.

Hi Everyone,
FTTH or Smart Wiring seems to have caused a lot of confusion, this confusion has also caused many companies to try and cash in with ludicrous pricing, it you want a better deal why not speak to the experts that have done a great many Telstra Velocity installs?

Nathan from smartwiring aust. is doing our wiring, alarm and theatre room, came in a few thousand dollars cheaper than other quotes and seem quite nice.... also building just around the corner from me....
They are doing a pre wire ( running the cables I assume - not verytechnically minded) before the plaster next week and then come back to fit off at handover.
if you want his details, happy to pass on, always willing to pass on good service

Hi
I'm also building in Laurimar - Harrisons View, and my builder has installed my velocity wiring....i'm almost at completion stage and have noticed that the 2 double power points for the cabinet has been put in the garage where they were supposed to go according to the plan...but the actual termination point for all the wiring has ended up on the other side of the wall in the broom cupboard (theres a big hole hole in the wall with the wire poking out). I asked the builder about this and he said that the rules have changed and there not allowed to put the box in the garage anymore...does anyone know about this? Seems a bit odd i'd much rather it in the garage and not taking up my broom closet space! And I have heard that the unit should not be in confined spaces...does anyone have any advice? Thanks

Hi Angel,
Telstra install 2 things
1. ONT - which is the box that goes on the side of the house, basically this is where the internal cabling meets the Telstra network 2. a Power supply unit which is basically a big adapter that is installed at the power point where the conduit has been run to, this is almost always in the garage even when it's a starserve system.
In you need any further clarification feel free to call me

Hi Nathan Thank you for your response, I think its the starserve mid size cabinet thats going to end up in my broom closet all the cables that have been run through the house are going to this area. The cabinet was supposed to be on the other side of the wall in the garage where the power points are. When I queried this I was told that there not allow to put the hub in the gararge anymore. The ONT (lead in cable on plan) will be outside on the other side of the house which is ok. Thank you for your number I will probably call you tomorrow as i'm very confused!

Thanks for all your replies guys. I still have very little knowledge in this area.
But at that price it doesn't make me freak out as much. However we are building with * and they wont allow us to outsource any other contractors until handover.
So does this mean we have to go with whoever their contractor is and pay there outrageous prices?

I am in Malvern Springs Ellenbrook, We are currently getting quotes for Smart wiring to Velocity netowork not that we have much choice. I am finding a lot of variation between contractors. Intelligent Homes wanted over 3000 for 3 tv a couple of data point. Another in Bibra lake want 2000 for the same thing. I am currently checking with a Electrical company in Greenwood. They seem to have the best price but want to add things like a Signal booster for the TV. Do you actually need a booster? What is a fair price for 3 tv points and 7 data points? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
