Hey Everyone.

I have a HT room, around 6m X 4m. The screen, front speakers and Sub are all sitting up against the double brick external wall. On the other side of this wall there is a 1/2m gap then the colorbond fence then id say a 1m gap then the neighbours house. When the sound is quite loud and i stand outside the room between my house and the neightbours i can definately hear quite a bit (not audible but definately noise pollution) and am worried that this may be getting through to the neighbours.

The room which the screen backs onto has 2 large windows that have been covered in with a sheet of standard gyprock that is flush with the wall (just covers up the window to stop the light).

Now am i correct in my thinking that if i remove these 2 gpyrock sheets, build a wooden frame with sound sheets on either side and insulation in the middle to go into the window areas, seal them back up as well as filling the roof cavity above with a bit more sound insulation that the noise going through to the neighbour would be a bit less?

My theory being that its the bass which is mainly getting through and by massing up the window areas this may help a little.

I am not looking to stop the sound altogether as its just impossible on my budget but my aim at least for the short term would be reducing the outside noise enough for me to be able to listen to movies / music a bit louder inside the house without the constant worry that i may be making a racket.

Any comments would be appreciated as id love to get started on this, this weekend.

Hi

Have a look at the CSR web site. On there you can download a PDF copy of their 'red book' publication - this contains a number of solutions for noise reduction.

You are correct in thinking that sound will pas through the windows - standard plasterboard is effectively transparent for sound, but if you are worried about the bass then you may need to treat the entire wall as low frequencies will be audible even through brick at high volume.

Look at the SoundCheq products as well as acoustic batts (these are denser than insulation batts). Had a wall built with that combination, and you can barely hear from one room to the next even at high volume.
