Hi,

About to go put in my electrical plans (double storey house) with a volume builder and have some questions. I'm happy to go wi-fi in some parts of the house like the lounge, kitchen and alfresco areas but would like Cat6 points for some equipment in the study and also for hooking up up NAS and media streamer. Maybe a network point in each room as well.

I'm thinking of having all network ports terminated into the room under the stairs where I plan to house the network switch. Is this an ideal location? I'm concerned about heat and ventilation. Are switches generally noisy if they have fans?

Also, since my estate is optical fiber enabled, I think the default plan from the builderis really something from Argus like a Hills Hub which is most likely located in the garage. How is this going to affect my plans?

Under the stairs for a double story house is a good central spot for network cabinet.

I'd suggest going two data in every room rather than one, and i'd go at least four points where you'll have TVs or anything like that. Best to overcompensate now because things are only going to require ethernet more in the future.

I don't know what the room under the stairs is like, but it might get warm, if there's an outside wall in there you might put in an exhaust fan or something. Some others on here may have better solutions for you.

Ditch the Hills hub is my suggestion, get your Cabler to do the fibre lead in straight to your cabinet under the stairs for ultimate flexibility.

+1. A Hills Hub setup might appear easier initially but you lose a lot of flexibility, and really, a standard patch panel type setup is just as easy.

We have our "server closet" under the stairs and it is a little bit warmer in there, but only 3-5 degrees. Since (a) it is in the middle of the house, well insulated and (b) we are in Tassie it usually doesn't get more than about 25 degrees.

One other suggestion I will give - seal the room (ie. paint the walls with undercoat, seal the floor using bondcrete) to reduce the amount of grit (dust and plaster particles) in the area!

Depending on just "where" the under-the-stairs is, run a conduit there from an accessible place, like in the ceiling.

We built our house MANY years ago, and have never been able to "add" to our under-the-stairs stuff as there is no access there ..........

Run a 35mm-50mm conduit at building stage so you can access it later !!
