Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 16, 2017 10:12 pm We are just about decided on a design and would love feedback on it. We are a family of 4 (kids aged 2 and 7) looking to build a home that will see us through for at least 10 years. Initially the theatre will be used for our piano/library - if we need it as a tv room when the kids are older we will address that then. Figure while the kids are little they will be in the living area mostly.Their toys can hide in the retreat and as they grow we think we will set up the retreat with their desks for study. Would love some feedback, good and bad! THANKS Re: Our Design 2Nov 16, 2017 11:11 pm Hello! Your living and dining might be a little dark as the only external window will be shaded by the outdoor living? Which way is north? Re: Our Design 3Nov 16, 2017 11:34 pm Also, how about replacing the door to the toilet with a cavity slider, and adding a small basin in there. It’ll come in handy when your 17 yr old is spending an hour in the bathroom and no one else can get in to wash their hands! Re: Our Design 4Nov 17, 2017 8:22 am Not knowing which way is north, I would probably suggest putting a few skylights in the main dining/living area. They don't provide stark, bright light, but will definitely help to increase light in that area during the day. We have a similar plan to you in so far as where the dining and living is placed and I am now thinking of adding skylights (we already have one in our kitchen) - these rooms can be quite a bit darker than others, even on a sunny day sometimes. We are thinking of putting a high raked ceiling through the family/living area (as per the picture) and I wouldn't mind a skylight in the kitchen too. I am a bit light obsessed. And maybe a glass/window splashback along the kitchen wall, but are these a nightmare to keep clean? I'm a bit concerned about the alfresco being under the main roof line - Ive always had a laser light or similar roof to allow more light. Thoughts? I suppose it is cooler under the main roof? Love the vanity in the toilet idea! What do people think of the 2 way fireplace? Overkill? Only other feedback from me - do you entertain a lot? If so perhaps consider the theatre being a smaller formal lounge & bringing the powder room closer to the front (with a basin) so visitors don't have to walk all the way through your home. Your retreat room could then become the theatre room. Only other consideration would be a 3rd toilet (even if integrated somehow into main bathroom) so the kids don't have to walk too far at night?
