Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 05, 2014 8:34 pm Hi all, I'm building with Burbank and I didn't want to go with their security system because basically I can get a better system installed for less, but they're telling me I'm not allowed as it will void the frame warranty. To me, this seems incredibly anti-competitive (use our premium priced under-featured systems or...nothing at all) and the system I'd like to install requires cameras and hard-wiring downstairs which will be impossible or extremely difficult once the house is finished as it is a double storey. I spoke to my mate who is the security system installer and he said what they are doing is illegal and I should check in with the ombudsman - but I wanted to check in and see if anyone else has successfully dealt with this issue before with their builder? Thanks in advance, Darren Re: Am I allowed to add security wiring to a dbl storey? 2Jul 05, 2014 11:08 pm I'm guessing the real issue here is that you are wanting them to allow your own installer on site during the build rather than what type of system you have installed. The builder is well within their rights to not allow you or other trades you have engaged to perform work on a project they are contracted for. My suggestion to you would be to have the builder install the wiring for you and then have your installer fit all the equipment after handover. They will have no issue doing this as long as you haven't already signed the contract and agreed to no variations on your part... Completed a knock down and rebuild in northern Melbourne. Re: Am I allowed to add security wiring to a dbl storey? 3Jul 06, 2014 12:16 am I think i understand where your friend is coming from, but i don't think he's on the right track regarding what their doing being illegal. He's thinking anti competitive behavior, specifically third line forcing. Which doesn't really fit in this scenario as theyre not strictly forcing you to comply with a condition to receive their warranty. They're not stopping you from installing anything, they're just telling you that the warranty will be void if you do work that impacts the integrity of their build. Its the same as your ipad warranty being void if you have the screen repaired by anyone other than apple (al beit if you can proof faulty goods irrespective, it doesn't matter). That said checking with your local fair trading/consumer afairs ACCC etc for advice would be your first port of call. The other thing you need to remember is that they cant just deny you warranty on faulty work. EG your house falls down because the frame is built with chewing gum instead of nails - the third party alarm install has nothing to do with this and you would be covered under statutory customer guarantee. Re: Am I allowed to add security wiring to a dbl storey? 4Jul 07, 2014 8:34 pm Thanks guys, will do. Bluesude, I think that's actually a great idea, I might ask if they can supply the wiring itself, might be a good workaround, thanks! Cheers, Darren Re: Am I allowed to add security wiring to a dbl storey? 5Jul 07, 2014 8:45 pm We are having pre-wiring installed a video intercom system so then we have flexibility regarding the system we choose and possibly save $$$.
