The lights turn on themselves at dusk (don't ask me how). They aren't solar. They're some weird thing I've never heard of. Electric but some weird other name too. Already thinking about the backyard but realistically that won't happen for a long time. See you in 2 years! Hahaha. Hoping it WON'T be that long! Actually I still have more to post, such as when the turf is laid on the nature strip and when the whole front has had a big clean down! It's effectively a switch that works on the amount of light being received. It's not Solar As far as the backyard just plan it out and do it in steps. It's not that difficult. You may need to just pay someone a few hundred bucks to do some ground works and then do all the barrowing of soil etc yourself. Your bonus is its downhill! I just checked and it's called PE Cell - 'Light activated Weatherproof Light Sensitive Switch' The barrowing of soil is done, they did 150+ trips front to back so at least we got to use the soil from the front. Need to give it a Winter to settle down and for grass to grow. You have been lucky with the weather earlier this week. Wednesday was really quite warm for June. I wish I could say the same for today though..... shouldn't complain though, if we don't get a decent winter we will have bigger issues Those trees are going to fill out really well, in 12-18 months time you will hardly recognise the place. Re the back yard, what are your plans? What is on the wish list? Re: Classic style weatherboard Melb - planting day! 811Jun 17, 2016 10:25 am WifeofHunza It is all looking superb! Re the back yard, what are your plans? What is on the wish list? We have been lucky with the weather. The nature strip turf got laid today so I'll grab a photo later. Everything's a mess again but they're going to clean it up. Glad you asked WoH! For the backyard we have a few concept ideas. Here are a few pics: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Credit http://www.houzz.com.au/projects/725039/hyde-park-getaway Without all the tall trees. Instead of the dark covered pergola thingy, maybe something a bit more in line with the house (white/grey) such as this: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Also, due to the deck not getting a lot of sun (South facing!) we would like to extend the deck area of that pergola but uncovered (such as you see in the foreground of the top photo, but extended directly from pergola). This would provide some privacy from the neighbours behind too, as they kind of look straight into our backyard from their balcony. I have decided on Himalayan birch as that's more drought hardy, apparently. I'd like 3 or 4 in a row, maybe against a fence. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Left side against fence, designated cottage garden! To soften the modern look of the rest of it. I've already done a spreadsheet of suitable flowers and shrubs - hahaha! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ There must be a white arbour somewhere! Would love a fountain in the centre of the yard, but that could be a pipedream (apparently these things can cost thousands). I envisioned something like this: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Yeah so as you can see, all this is a while off. I like to prepare though! I love a detailed plan! I always spreadsheet things, you have to organise your thoughts. For my daughters birthday parties I have been know to create spreadsheets with several supporting documents and individual event running sheets for the grandparents/relatives just to ensure they know exactly their responsibilities on the day etc...... I am not obsessive at all..... Ha ha ha ha ha ha! Anyway back to your fantastic garden plans..... I love them all, lucky you seem to have a decent size backyard to realise your dream. The raised veggie garden (particularly that shape) is so practical but still beautiful, something that would bring a lot of produce and joy. Certainly pic #1 in the right colours to match the house would be stunning and can see why you chose that one. I just did a quick search on the fountains.... Yikes!!!! Saw some at the price of a small car, but some others that are a bit more reasonable just depends what you are after. This place seemed to have an interesting range http://www.thegardenfountainstore.com/t ... -fountains Cannot wait to see some more pic of the finished front yard. I'm glad I am not the only spreadsheet nutter! That fountain site is good - but in New Orleans - hahaha! Thanks though I do know of a couple around and of course some garden nurseries have the odd one. Yep will definitely take a shot of the whole front garden but not just yet. Forgot the stones are still coming (for the garden bed mulch) and also it's still a mess. They left on Fri without cleaning up - bit unimpressed cos now it's dirty for the weekend. At least it's raining so some of the dirt has been washed away. Hard to tell just based on a picture on a website! So I think we're pretty much done, except for the last clean up stuff they have left to do. The poor pears lost most of their leaves now, but think that's normal for this time of year and until they're more established. I will do a photo with the house and everything in it, after the final clean up! Would you fill them to the top, or partially fill?
