Hi Jodge,
Welcome to my thread.

Hey Variegated. . . thanks!

Haha, I agree on the bath. .. we put a spa bath in our main bathroom, only ever gets used when we've had a really hard day's DIY or one of us has the flu. Other people have said how much they don't like spas, but I think these people have small children. . . we don't!

Approved!

Congratulations Variegated! That's excellent news! Was that a month and a half? That's pretty quick. . . your house is probably something they don't get very often. Are you excited?

Hey Jodge -time taken for DA was just a little over a month. Initial check was completed on 22 February, and the notification of approval was in my inbox on 28 March - considerably less time than I was led to believe it would take.
As for excited? I think that 'terrified' is closer - I now have to start doing things, like packing up my house to sell, organising storage, finding somewhere else to live for the duration - all the things I have been avoiding for months! Time to stop dreaming and make it actually happen!

Make it happen Variegated! Haha, does this mean that you're not prepared as you thought it was going to take another couple of weeks at least? Well, look on the bright side. . . at least you haven't had time to worry. Once you get into the swing of things, and the place starts coming together, excitement will take over! Time to enjoy the ride. . .weeeeeeeeeeee

How are things going Variegated? Have you sold your house? Getting close to building?

Ribbon,
Thank you for asking - I'm being a bit stuck actually - at work my boss has been on leave, so I have been spending rather a lot of time there. I have all the paper work bar the contract ready to sell the house, so hopefully when I'm only doing my job from the middle of this week, I'll have the energy to get on with it!

Hi Variegated,

A STRAWBALE???

Oh my, it's my favourite method of construction!!!! :z: I shall certainly follow your build...

If I could have persuaded my darling I would've built strawbale too. Sadly no luck in that department, he prefers to stick to familiar methods ::sad:: Can't wait to watch your progress!!!

Hi Variegated,
I'm envious! I would love to have a strawbale house, but unless I built it myself it would cost alot more than a conventional home. I wish you all the best with it.

Thenks for dropping in Trees and Kylie.
On of my sisters built a strawbale house with her partner up near Toowoomba, so I'm really being a copy cat!
I'm trying to build a house that will be as inexpensive as possible to run, and I really love the idea of using materials that would
otherwise be waste in such a "long-lived" way.
I meet with the architect again on Wednesday morning to talk about windows - all will be double glazed, but now to decide which type of windows often the best value for money!
Kylie, it's my experience that strawbale isn't that much more expensive to have built for you, particularly when taking into consideration
the noise reduction and insulation qualities. The reason my whole house won't be strawbale is the cost of rendering!

Another one interested in the strawbale build :D We've stayed in a couple of B&B's that have been built using this method and have definately considered doing one ourselves. Still an option for the future  This time we have gone hebel which also needs to be fully rendered. I am surprised yours costs so much to render as ours only cost abour 10k above brick price. (Single story approx 320sm) It is being rendered (texture coated) as I type :D

Welcome and thank you ktotherose. I found out fairly recently that the builder in the partnership became a carpenter because he wanted to build himself a strawbale house! I feel very lucky to have found an architect/builder combination who are so in tune with what I want to do. Jigsaw Housing also have a licensed Building energy efficiency assessor, and they have said they are starting to be disappointed if the designs don't reach 8 stars these days!

Welcome dreamcometrue.

The rendering is to be a lime render, and it is my understanding that not everyone can do that! In addition, it is necessary to render both sides of the strawbales, not just the outside, so it is double the job. The lime render allows the walls to breathe, so (heaven forbid) that if water does ever get into the bales, it can also get out again (evaporation). Lime render is also more flexible than other renders, and so has less cracking, something that is really important if you want to keep bales dry.

I just realised I haven't posted pics of the selection I have made, so here are some (not very good) pictures. The tiles photos were sent to my by the sales lady as I hadn't taken my camera!

This one shows all the colours available in the bamboo feature tile - the real thing is 4 bamboo "poles", and I'll have the black. The feature will be on the north wall of the bathroom, and will be able to be seen from the door. The feature is 180cm long

Both ensuite and main bathroom will have built-in seats, and the one in the main bathroom will be tiled with the river-textured tile - same colour as the floor but just that little bit different. Floor tile is underneath the textured tile.

The bathroom wall tiles have just a bit of texture, which doesn't really show up very well in images. Just at the top left hand corner of this, it might be possible to see the texture - rather like rain on windows.

The above-counter vessel basin for the main bathroom

Plain white gloss walls in the ensuite with the feature tile running the height of the tiling behind the loo, and the wall the built-in seat will be in the shower, so the seat will also be featured tiled. The vines match up making a trailing vine pattern, with black, grey and silver stems and leaves. These features won't be seen from the doors of the ensuite, so I hope it will be both WOW factor, and a surprise. Pebble-look tiles in charcoal for the floor.

Triangular above-counter vessel for the ensuite

The three colours of bamboo flooring available - natural, coffee, and champagne

An attempt to photograph the Champagne bamboo which will be the flooring for everywhere except bathroom and laundry on the ground floor. I'll have carpet in the loft bedroom, but haven't decided what yet.
