Post subject:  Austral Whitsunday Bricks

Hi

Has anyone had any experience with this range of brick -good or bad. I have a few samples at home and the darker colours seem to show chips etc very obviously. I am worried about using a darker colour and having a house that has chipped bricks all over it. Any other experiences with Austral bricks would be much appreciated as well. The other possible ranges we are looking at are Urban One and Metropolis.

Thanks

Hi
We have just built a house and we were going with the Austral Whitsunday range but ours were discontinued so we changed to the impressions range with the colour moccasin and it looks great. Check out blog.

The Austral Whitsunday range has its colour applied on the surface of the brick. That's why chips will show fairly obviously. For that reason we decided to go with a coloured-through brick instead (we chose one from the Everyday Life range).

We went with an Austral Whitsundat brick - Brampton. The colour is only applied to the surface of the brick with the brick itself being an orangey colour. As a result any chips show very obviously. I will try and find some photos and post

I love our bricks but the chips show up alot. I'm glad our mortar is flushed and if the chipping gets worse over time it should be fairly painless to render. You can't see the chips from a distance also

Hope that helps

Hi everyone

Thanks for your replies. The non colour through thing is a concern with the chipping etc. Bon, thanks for the photos - this is exactly what has happened to the sample bricks in our backyard. One of the Whitsunday's (Keswick) is also showing the actual brick colour through the whole thing so the brick looks a pinky colour. We have now worked out we need an exposure grade brick as well so that it causing us problems as most in our standard range aren't exposure grade. The only one that is is some of the Urban One bricks but I've heard pretty bad stories about the quality of the Urban One bricks. We are now considering paying to upgrade our bricks but most of the upgrade options seems to be no better than the standard ones.

Oh well, I guess we will get there eventually.

Hi, we have just had our home built with keswick bricks and wouldnt recommend it (IMO). I would go with a brick with colour all the way through. Then also the edges are different colour. See photo.

Hi woodduck

Thanks for your photos. Alot of the bricks we have looked at and houses in those bricks seems to be a different colour on the ends. I keep looking at houses around my area that are a few years old or so and none of them seem to have this problem. Maybe it's to do with a new way of making the bricks. Even the more expensive Metallix range of bricks have different colours on the ends of the bricks.

We are going to look at PGH tomorrow and see if we can find anything there that looks good and is worth paying for to upgrade. If not, it's back to Austral to find the 'least worst' brick.

Hi all, we are looking at using the Whitsunday Brampton on our house. We actually were a little concerned about this before finding this thread.

We spoke to some people today who had this brick and their builder has advised them that the bricks will be painted where cipped before handover.

Does anyone know if this is a recommended thing or is builder just covering himself?

we had a look at the bricks and even spoke to someone out at Austral about the chipping. Basically was recommended to go for something out of another range so not to worrk about it over the life of the brick. The everyday range had some nice and similar choices

we have actually decided to go with a PGH brick as there was much more choice in exposure grade and lots of nice bricks that are not "painted on"

Thanks.

The Everyday Life Engage is our second option but this is a little darker and not as grey as the Brampton.

We have not looked at any of the PGH range in person. Do you know if there are any similar to colour of the Brampton?

Does anyone know if the Urban One Silver brick has a painted finish to surface?

Engage is a good colour.

I think PGH would have a few good choices to look at. Start with cement or Pearl Grey? (similiar in colour to each other but different textures)

I'm pretty sure all of the Urban one range is painted on too. There is definitely a different colour under the face of the brick. The main difference I see is that urban one is exposure grade brick

We are thinking of ordering Austral Elements Zinc brick. Will this be prone to chipping also?
