Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 14, 2010 6:57 pm We paid extra to have a higher roof pitch for our house but l'm unsure as to whether it has been done or not. They are up to the roof tiles atm. Is there a way of checking? Handover date 3rd August 2010 WOOHOO!!! Re: How can you tell if they put in a higher roof pitch? 5Apr 14, 2010 8:33 pm I'm not sure in the building context however it seems to be simple geometry/trig. A way would be to use part of a roof truss. You don't need to measure the entire roof line, just a small portion but it does involve getting into the roof. Measure say 300mm from the edge of the roof truss along the horizontal member. Then measure the vertical distance from this point to the part of the roof truss running diagonal. If you do it, be consistent in the measurements ie. all from the outside edge or the internal edge otherwise you will get the wrong angle. Once you have those dimension, you can use TAN (trigonometry) to work out the roof pitch angle angle = tan^-1 (height/horizontal part) There would be other methods where you could take an angle measurement of the roof at a single point however if the tiles are already on I don't know how accurate this would be as the part sitting on the tiles may not represent the actual pitch. Another way could be to speak to the manufacturer and have them confirm the trusses supplied were for a 25 degree pitch!? Re: How can you tell if they put in a higher roof pitch? 6Apr 14, 2010 8:41 pm above is the real way of working it out. A quick way should be by refering to the plan. You should be able to measure the height of the roof, on the plan. So say for example it is 2.5 centemeters Then in real life if you can measure the hieght it should be 2.5 meters as per the scale. This is only works out if the drawing was correctly drawn at 25 degrees and not only labelled at 25 degrees. sierra, your right with your maths. But builders are not that smart so they have to look at other ways to work things out. If i am not mistaken carpenters use to have a look up table that they would use when designing conventional roofs before trusses came along. Re: How can you tell if they put in a higher roof pitch? 7Apr 15, 2010 1:25 pm Try asking for the roof trusses delivery docket from your builder. I found a delivery docket ****** at my backyard when roof was under construction and the itemised docket stated 25 deg pitch. Re: How can you tell if they put in a higher roof pitch? 8Apr 15, 2010 7:28 pm Thanks l think l just paid for an upgrade that is already meant to come with this style house. l checked on both drawings (my house and the standard plans are they are exactly the same. Why would they charge me over $1000 for this then Handover date 3rd August 2010 WOOHOO!!! Re: How can you tell if they put in a higher roof pitch? 9Apr 16, 2010 12:24 pm hmmm standard roof pitch is 22.5 deg for builders. If you compare the standard plan versus yours, you should be able to see the indication of roof pitch in the pages towards the end. Re: How can you tell if they put in a higher roof pitch? 10Apr 23, 2010 5:49 pm The standard is 22.5 and we are getting 25 degrees. So everything is all sorted Handover date 3rd August 2010 WOOHOO!!!
