Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 04, 2022 11:52 am I have 2 variants of bricks utilised on the exterior of the house. The white is for the facade and the dark on the sides. Both are of the same height and size. The bricklayer, builder send me the photos saying the bricks don't alight due to variance in brick height. Surely the 3 mm, Max variance can be adjusted by using additional grout. I have measured the brick variance are very minimal. Further, the Builder tells me the base course has settled due to the weight of bricks. Does it seem the bricklayer is working fast and not allowing enough time or its an issue with the grout or bad workmanship? Can anyone provide insight? Height of standard bricks is 76mm with tolerance of +/- 50mm as measured on a stack of 20 bricks. This gives an average of 5mm per brick nominal variation. Mortar bed standard is 10mm with tolerance of +/- 3mm so there is 6mm available to adjust this to blend in. Also if the bricks are defective why did they accept and lay them? Check your states fair trading guide to standards and tolerances and brick manufacturers specs. Re: Issues with newly laid bricks 3Feb 04, 2022 4:19 pm Kippers01 I think they are BS ing you. Check your states fair trading guide to standards and tolerances and brick manufacturers specs. +/-50mm over 20 bricks is an average of 2.5mm not 5, but it's irrelevant as brick work should be layed using a gauging stick so it's to coursing. The bricks are 76mm and the gauge is 28 bricks to 2400mm height. If the used a gauging stick the bricks shouldn't have krept as they have done in the picture. It's poor workmanship pure and simple. The part about the bricks sinking under their weight is crazy talk. You should ask the builder if they are expected to continue sinking and why haven't the others brick sunk as well. Sometimes I just shake my head at the rubbish builders will say just to avoid doing the job right.
