Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 16, 2009 9:25 am Hello. We're currently going through a list of inclusions to add to our tender with Masterton and are wondering what a bulkhead is. Do we really need a feature bulkhead to our main bedroom for $850?! We're very, very new to this and any help we can get is greatly appreciated. Re: What is a Bulkhead!! 2Apr 16, 2009 9:35 am Nope, you don't need it, but they can look great. A feature bulkhead could mean many things. Is the home on display? Is it a displayed option so you can see exactly how it is presented? I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: What is a Bulkhead!! 3Apr 16, 2009 9:39 am I only understand bulkheads as applied to kitchens in which the term normally means a plaster infill covering the space at the top of the cupboards if the cupboards do not go all the way to the ceiling. Not sure what a feature bulkhead in the bedroom would be but it would have to be a cosmetic addition, purely for aesthetic appeal, not functional; one thing is for sure - you certainly don't "need" one, if you would rather not spend $850 on something purely cosmetic, then you don't have to!! It's really hard to visualise what they mean in your case. Which house is it and are there pics on line? I guess the main point is that as Helyn said, it is purely a cosmetic thing. Up to you whether you want it or not. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I can see how it can make a room really stand out We're looking at the Urban Elite which is on display at the Masterton display village - about 1 1/2 hours away. We've made two trips down there in the past week to look at it and took a little video on our last visit to remember how it all looked. Unfortunately our wonderful little niece was playing around with our video camera and deleted it and now I can't remember what the main bedroom looked like. Judging by your photos, I guess it can only make a room look better! Re: What is a Bulkhead!! 7Apr 16, 2009 10:29 am Ok, I just had a look at the floorplan. I can see where the bulkhead runs on the Urban elite. It is not a big one, it looks like it runs the length of the wall that backs onto the alfresco. Where it shows a dotted line, between the two nib walls on that wall, that's the bulkhead. I'm only going from the floorplan though so I could be completely wrong.... check with the sales consultant. It will look really good because it will frame the bedhead area. But the amount they are charging as actually quite expensive. http://i519.photobucket.com/albums/u353/joles_photo/Urban_Elite_FPlan.jpg I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I have seen awesome examples of these with little lights in the niches (but can't find any pics unfortunately). Will look something like the top part of this bedroom... Re: What is a Bulkhead!! 9Apr 16, 2009 11:32 am So that's what the dotted lines are for!! That was a question I had for our sales consultant. Thank you I do remember the 3 niches running along the wall which looked really good. Just wish I could remember what the bulkhead above it looked like! Thanks again for the advice and photos. It helps a lot Re: What is a Bulkhead!! 10Apr 16, 2009 11:51 am hallie_mia So that's what the dotted lines are for!! That was a question I had for our sales consultant. It helps a lot My interpretation of the plan is that the niches are "cut into" the bulkhead. What level were the niches? If they were halfway up the wall then the bulkhead may drop a fair way down. Maybe something like this... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ which doesn't look like a bulkhead and more like part of the wall - which maybe why you can't remember it. Re: What is a Bulkhead!! 11Apr 16, 2009 12:35 pm My husband remembers the niches running from the floor to the ceiling but I don't remember them being quite that big, and neither of us remember the bulkhead. Sounds as though we'll have to go back for another visit to the display village! Re: What is a Bulkhead!! 12Apr 16, 2009 12:57 pm No you don't have to have it. Its a decoration piece of roofing. this is what our bulk heads will look like in the lounge room and dining room. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn99/MissyTJ76/housePics097.jpg?t=1239853648 John, Tarin and the Kids Built and moving in to the Regent Grande with Masterton homes http://thebrownsaremovingtothecountry.blogspot.com Re: What is a Bulkhead!! 13Apr 16, 2009 2:12 pm Thanks JohnAndTarin. I noticed you guys are building with Masterton so I had a read through your blog. You seem fairly happy building with them. Rather than the big drive... why don't you ring the sales consultant and see if he/she can snap you a pic and email it to you? I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: What is a Bulkhead!! 15Apr 16, 2009 5:08 pm Good idea, I'll do that. My poor little girls are getting very sick of driving all over the place being dragged from display home to display home.
