Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 11, 2009 7:24 pm How much did you get charged for a gas point to the alfresco / external area. Our builder H quoted $764 to provide a gas point to the alfresco area (about 10 m away from the kitchen). Does this sound reasonable? Walking through my friend's brother house (at frame stage, with the same builder) I notice that the gas pipe is a yellow plastic pipe running across the ceiling. Do those plastic pipe really cost that much? Re: gas point to alfresco price 3Apr 11, 2009 7:28 pm Mine cost $219 with PD, but they didn't have to upgrade the gas line. Sometimes they do. Your price sounds like the line had to be upgraded. Does it say anything about that? I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: gas point to alfresco price 4Apr 11, 2009 7:35 pm Why does it need to be upgraded? Does a typical BBQ use more gas than an upright cooker with 5 burner?? The wording on the quote is: Quote: Provide 19 mm gas point to single story house (exceeding 2m from existing gas point -including upgrading / increasing gas line) for future connection by owner after settlement, located at corner of Alfresco. What I asked for is a gas point to Alfresco for BBQ. Re: gas point to alfresco price 5Apr 11, 2009 7:38 pm Costing us $110 through our builder - original quote was $80 but that went up at contract stage - even still pretty happy with the price. ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Loooove our house, but still not quite sure it was worth all of the stress they put us through! Re: gas point to alfresco price 6Apr 11, 2009 7:43 pm I'm not sure on the technical reasons for it, someone else can probably help out there. But I know some lines need to be upgraded and some don't. It's not builder specific. I know some that have built with PD that needed the line upgraded, and others that didn't. I'm sure it's the same with your builder. But for whatever reason your line needed to be upgraded. With that in mind, the price sounds pretty much right. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I'm sure Joles is right, but I thinking how do they know it needs an "upgraded line" when they quote, I think it's a ripoff! But maybe all 10m distance connections need to be upgraded, it just doesn't sound right at all. Which builder charged you this fruitty? Annie A thankful person is a happy person. Annie I am thinking they (a lot of builders) work on the principle that if in doubt (or can get away with as cust won't know thew difference) then just upgrade it's H3nley Re: gas point to alfresco price 10Apr 12, 2009 2:25 pm We asked about a gas point that was being put in the kitchen to instead be placed in our alfresco as we are having electric hot plates. The response was because we have 3 closed sides to our alfresco it would be very costly as it would then need a vent or commercial grade rangehood to allow a breather within the "room" and also this would now have to be resubmitted to council as the plumbers would only fit it if it had been approved. As the builders plumbers did not want to be held responsible for fitting a gas point without proper ventilation they need to see that the council is happy with the plan also. So we are just going to have a gas bottle Re: gas point to alfresco price 11Apr 12, 2009 2:39 pm Have been charged $211 to have a gas point placed in the al fresco. Apparently it's only suited to use with a 4 burner, if I wanted a bigger BBQ then I had to upgrade the size of the line, for extra $$$s (Can't help with the price of the upgrade, 4 burners are enough for me so didn't bother asking) Re: gas point to alfresco price 12Apr 12, 2009 2:54 pm We got two additional gas points inside (for gas heater) and one to alfresco for $550. cheers Building in remote, regional Vic We have roof, frame, walls, plumbing, electrical....but no bricks! What builder or tradie is ever going to charge cost price of materials?? If they did that they wouldn't be inbusiness for very long at all. There always has to be a margin, it's just how big that margin is and how much you are willing to pay for their quality of service. It's 7m from the next nearest point (the kitchen) that they work from. No idea why so expensive though. But if I tried getting gas connected later on I'd be paying close to $1k so its not a biggie really. I'm sure the moment we go down the building path we all have a target on our back "rip me off pls". It just a matter of how much we are prepare to pay (for things that can't be done latter).
