Post subject:  Brick overhang and slab curing questions!!

I'm just wondering what the maximum tolerance is for bricks to be over the edge beam as in some places on my house that is just being bricked up it is upto 15-20mm. Is this ok?

Also the bricks went up 20 days after the slab was poured. I thought 28 days was the normal minimum curing time.

With your house is it brick veneer or cavity brick?

20 days is fine...

+1 I have seen bobcats running around on a slab 6 days old.
sounds like the slab was over/undersize or mis-measured?
Is this next to a wet area?

It's brick veneer with a steel frame and the wall is not near any wet areas. The wall is 4.6 metres long and has four peirs about 900mm in natural ground. Some builders I have spoke to say it may be a problem and others said it wont be.

It's my first home so it's all new to me....!

The maximum the brick can overhang according to the BCA is 15mm...

For the steel inner frame it should be 10mm...

The slab curing is within the updated Australian Standard 3600 so i'm happy with that.

see this doc:
http://www.mbansw.asn.au/BannerManager/ ... IDE_07.pdf

then search for "brick overhang"

it cover a lot of the standards and tolerances in building

not sure if it cover curing timeframe

I have measured the overhang which is up to 23mm in about 4 different areas. What would the best approach be:

1. Ask the SS about it.
2. Ask the Construction Certifying company.
3. Hire a building inspector.

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

Go for them in that order... Let the SS do his job first, and if you don't get a solution then go the the Company... In all cases ask how it complies with the Building Code of Australia?

We had about 25mm overhang of timber frame (before bricks laid) - see my post here. I mentioned it to SS and he immediately got the framers back to shift the entire structure about 20mm west. I got the impression he would have done it anyway without me pointing it out.

SS seems to think it's not a problem. Should I tell him about the minimum tolerances or ask the certifying company?

Ask the SS to show you how it complies with the Building Code of Australia?
