Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Building alone 61Aug 22, 2011 9:46 pm thought I would say hi and all the best with your build. my understanding is that if a builder generally uses tiles, he will get them cheaper as he bulk buys and visa versa for colourbond - some companies use both so don't charge extra whichever you choose. what state is Scone in? https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43937&start=0 Bought a block in Golden Grove - Jan 2011 Finally finished our design, Mar 2012, *yay* Signed with ADH council consent June 12 Re: Building alone 62Aug 22, 2011 10:33 pm Scone is in the Hunter region of NSW. I currently live on the Central Coast and Scone is 2hours 20minutes north west drive from CC. I'll post an aerial view of my 1/2 acre as soon as I work out how. Re: Building alone 64Aug 22, 2011 10:58 pm That looks like a lovely, rural spot ![]() It reminds me of a block we nearly bought in the Bar0ssa Valley (SA) only that was 2 1/2 acres but we had three offers knocked back, the third one being quite close to the asking price. In the end I decided I didn't want to live that far away from Adelaide (althoug hubby still sighs when he thinks of it ![]() https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43937&start=0 Bought a block in Golden Grove - Jan 2011 Finally finished our design, Mar 2012, *yay* Signed with ADH council consent June 12 Building alone 65Aug 22, 2011 11:07 pm I admire your courage and wish you all the best in achieving your dream. My Father also built his own house. He did it on his own, brick by brick. I am in the army so it was difficult for me to be along side him. It amazed me to see the progress he was making whenever I was able to come and visit on my leave. Everyone told him 'get a builder', 'it can't be done', 'you need help with this heavy lifting', 'you are up on a hill, it's too hard for one man'. He had a dream and he proved to me that if you really want to follow your dream, you will. Do it on your own and do it well. Keep a close eye on your builders and make frequent visits to your building site. By working with my Father who now has his own home maintenance business, I learned that many shortcuts can be taken throughout the building process. Shortcuts that you will never notice until the time comes for repairs later on. Your design looks promising, don't let shortcuts create problems for you in the future. My father drew his design on paper. Every evening he would sit down with a little whisky and I would watch him create his plan from scratch. He then showed it to our local architect, who turned it into a computer drawing of our house plan. This is when my father built his courage and went on to follow his dream. I hope this has been of some inspiration to you and my thoughts and hopes are with you. You can do it. Re: Building alone 66Aug 23, 2011 5:03 pm edwardmorris357 Thank you for your words of encouragement. I am lucky in that I have a brother who will be keeping an experienced eye on things for me (he used to be a carpenter). Dreamcometrue My block is 2383 which is just under 1/2 an acre. It is a rural spot, but is only 2 hours from Newcastle so definitely not out in the bush. Re: Building alone 67Aug 27, 2011 8:43 pm Signed the contract today. Also completed electrical plan. Don't know how much extra it's going to be but I didn't go overboard. The staff at the sales office are excellent and helped me decide on what and where. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to mention who I'm building with. Do I have to get their permission?
