Browse Forums Building A New House Re: {dawn} SE Melb Build - Plumbing fit out - 6 wks to go! 1001Apr 11, 2017 6:08 pm Mhmm... Both have some good ideas. My master bedroom will have white plantation shutters (west facing windows and street facing..). I would love to do wall to floor sheers across that wall too, but will probably be to expensive. I've heard of quotes of 2k for just the sheers. In the bedrooms (study/guest room) planning on double roller blinds, one blockout, one sheer.. but not sure on colours.. the walls are white, carpets will be chocolate brown. I'm thinking black might be too stark.. but white boring. Maybe cream/biege like you said Charli.. or a tan.. Kitchen will be a single roller, I only really want it for heat/privacy.. but will rarely use it.. not sure if I should have a single block out, or just a sheer/sunscreen. And again colour.. white seems boring, black too stark.. maybe grey/tan again? Or what about a pattern? Sidelight and laundry I hadn't planned to do anything, but people are telling me I should. Laundry is a sliding door, and going to have cat door.. but it is north facing, so might get hot.. but thankfully next summer is ages away XD Might just leave them for now though.. Bathrooms are obscured.. so not planning anything. Was going to do plantation shutters in main bath when the window was going to be clear.. The main one I'm not sure on is the living/dining.. so one big window, and one sliding door.. both face out onto the backyard. I like the idea of them being completely open, with all the greenery outside... but for keeping in/out the heat and privacy, I need something. Debating on roller blinds or curtains. Curtains will be more dramatic/stand out, and add a bit of softness to the room.. but I have pets.. they will get dirty.. plus have no idea what colour or style to pick.. Roller blinds will be nice and out of the way... so gives the full view.. but bit boring..and again what colour? And do I need double rollers? Do I go just sheer or blockout... pelmet or not? Or do I go with something different again... ahh!! Too many choices. So hard to find pics that can give me a sense of how it will look. Re: {dawn} SE Melb Build - Plumbing fit out - 6 wks to go! 1004Apr 12, 2017 12:43 pm That sucks about your tyres. I just found out my car needs new brakes I want shutters in the front bedroom, but not sure about what the costs are. The double blinds are a good choice if you want privacy and light in the room. I have a fixed window as my splashback so I don't think I will be doing anything with my kitchen window. I'm not sure what to do in bathrooms and laundry. My windows aren't obscured so I have to put something. Was thinking mAybe white wooden blinds? Way too hard for my brain. I think you're right, black would be too stark and white could be boring, but depends on the rest of the room. Just went past my block which is settling today, and the next door neighbour is putting fences up!! Since when can they put up a fence without getting my permission? I mean, thought I would have to agree to the price etc before they did that. Their land has already settled and pipes have been done but I don't get how they can just do the fences. Will be interesting to see if I just get given a bill; I won't be paying it straight away as I haven't even agreed to it! Strange. Re: {dawn} SE Melb Build - Plumbing fit out - 6 wks to go! 1005Apr 12, 2017 12:57 pm aloenyx I left dad in charge of getting punctures fixed... Ended up with 2 new tyres and one repaired. 245 dollars later. I feel the unexpected costs. Broke my tooth a month ago and finally went to the dentist yesterday... $2000 later 😢 I picked up my blinds today for upstairs. Ordered from blinds online and they had a really quick turnaround. Only downside is you have to measure and install yourself so hopefully they fit! Have you tried fabric conversions in oakleigh? Apparently fantastic and great price Re: {dawn} SE Melb Build - Plumbing fit out - 6 wks to go! 1006Apr 12, 2017 7:02 pm Eee.. unexpected costs I remember the month I signed my land contract, I got a tax bill, car battery died and told I needed wisdom teeth out and braces.. XD but it all worked out. My two shutters are about $1500 for 800x2100 installed. Surprised your neighbor is putting up fences already Mon, if they haven't even started building?? I don't think they can ask for you to pay if they didn't send you a notice or something prior.. Re: {dawn} SE Melb Build - Plumbing fit out - 6 wks to go! 1007Apr 12, 2017 7:07 pm Speaking of dentists I thought I was going to get told my braces were coming off today.. instead go referred to a specialist.. .great MORE time off work to arrange. I thought about DIY blinds but.. I'm not handy and was worried I wouldn't measure them right. I saw someones post and they had curtains in their bedroom.. and I fell in love. I think I want to go with curtains in the living and dining.. Re: {dawn} SE Melb Build - Plumbing fit out - 6 wks to go! 1009Apr 12, 2017 7:38 pm Ooh they are pretty! I had similar in my old house. I got them from spotlight on sale and they were pretty cheap. I did self install though (well my dad did ) I had eyelet ones. I bought curtain rods and they were drilled into the wood above the window. If you're wanting to attached higher then you'll have to have noggins in the wall above the window. Re: {dawn} SE Melb Build - Plumbing fit out - 6 wks to go! 1010Apr 12, 2017 7:50 pm Definitely want them higher, will have to see how that goes.. In other news... spoke to my builder today. It seems it was a good thing I figured out the shower screens were wrong on the plans, he's going to make sure they are installed correctly rather than as per plans. I asked for a progress update, and to find out what was happening this week.. but didn't get a clear answer.. so I have a feeling nothing has happened.. THANKS EASTER!!! I have arranged to meet the blind person on site on the 29th of April.. builder said he can't be there, but I will pick up the keys from their office, then go to the house.. which means I will have uninterrupted hours in the house on my own!! Can pretty much do my own PCI.. I'm excited, because I can go over everything with a fine tooth comb and make sure everything is right without having anyone looking over my shoulder or rushing me. Re: {dawn} SE Melb Build - Plumbing fit out - 6 wks to go! 1011Apr 12, 2017 9:36 pm Excellent news, im sure walking through will be so exciting. IKEA do fantastic sheers, might be worth looking at Build thread http://tinyurl.com/llgc7yk Re: {dawn} SE Melb Build - Plumbing fit out - 6 wks to go! 1013Apr 12, 2017 10:13 pm Have you checked out Curtain Wonderland? https://www.curtainwonderland.com.au/store-locations/ I got some really nice sheers for the living area of my previous house from here Building SOR with Dreamstart Homes Customised Dream Dior/Summer Sensation https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=83776 Re: {dawn} SE Melb Build - Plumbing fit out - 6 wks to go! 1014Apr 13, 2017 7:59 am I second the Ikea recommendation for window coverings. I haven't been in-store yet to look, but they have a system where you can mount the rail/rod from the ceiling, or from the wall above the window, you can curl the curtains around corners (which I may do for proper light-blocking in master bedroom and lounge for TV-watching in daytime). They have sheers and then blockout curtains, as well as both sheer and blockout blinds... I think most of my rooms I will do blockout roller blinds, but I think living/dining/master bed I will do double curtains (sheer and blockout). There are just SO many options for window coverings so I know what you mean about so much choice! I'm finding it hard to decide what to do as well!! I'm looking forward to seeing what you decide as I may pinch some ideas Re: {dawn} SE Melb Build - Plumbing fit out - 6 wks to go! 1015Apr 13, 2017 6:34 pm I did check out Curtain Wonderland. I got a full quote from them, came in at 7.5k bit too much. I might pop past Ikea this weekend.. for breakfast and check out some curtains.. Height may be my issue, I might need to go custom for the length of the curtains. I also didn't think curtain wonderland was so expensive, thought they might be on par with spotlight. Yeah my aunt and I go get the breakfast They probably weren't too bad, the quote was for the whole house.. but I think the custom curtains for the lounge room were $700 each.. bit more than I want to spend. Hmm.. I wonder if I will end up calling that room the living room, lounge room.. or something else. XD In my current house its the lounge room.. I really hope my house is ready in time... *sigh* I wish I knew more were happening.. It's so frustrating isn't it! All these public holidays aren't helping. I'm normally all for them but it feels like they've all came at bad times for us in the last couple of years. I visited our site yesterday to see both slabs in our estate that were poured at the same time as us now have frames complete and windows in. I makes me not want to go back, it's depressing. I feel like such a sook this early on but it's hard watching others race ahead. I know exactly how you feel it took our builders to the end of our 13th week from the start of the build before our frames started, I was getting very fed up but now at the end of week 15 our frames, windows and trusses are all complete and we know what's happening next.
