Sorry the way you have worded it was a little confusing at first. From what I can see many people firstly have kitchen's on an external wall, and many opt to have a window over the sink etc. From my point of view if someone really wants to get into a house there are plenty of other, bigger windows to target, so I can't see it being a huge issue. If you are worried about peeping toms you could always add tint if that would make you feel at ease? At the end of the day do what makes you feel most comfortable, you do need to live in the house after all... and a nice float glass (stuck on the brick) splash back will still look good. Hope this helps, maybe someone else has a different perspective Re: Having second thoughts on clear glass splashback 3Dec 23, 2014 5:54 am We've gone glass splashback to get more natural light and as a feature. I guess it depends on the position if on back or side of house. But at the end of the day if they want to break in they'll just smash a Window and cut flyscreen. That and mirror splashbacks with the same problem are 'on trend' at the moment. I wonder how popular they will be in 3 years time? I'd much rather have a window above the 'Splash Zone'. Re: Having second thoughts on clear glass splashback 5Dec 23, 2014 6:49 am We opted for the window splashback to allow more natural light in and see out into the garden. I would not have had the window splashback if it were behind the sink (ours is on the island) or if the window received direct sunlight (ours faces South). If we'd had the standard house design's window-as-a-splashback, it would have been behind the cooktop. So not just the cleaning every time you boil some pasta, but over time all the window seals etc would've been grimed-up. We've gone with a glass splashback, but it's just mounted to a wall (no window). I thought it would probably be easier to clean than tiles, there's more grout with tiles to collect "stuff" whereas there's not a lot of silicon sealing the glass splashback. Re: Having second thoughts on clear glass splashback 7Dec 23, 2014 7:01 am Ours is behind the cooktop. Irrespective of what you have behind the cooktop, it still needs cleaning. Hence cleaning frequency increases? However, the privacy issue raised by monalisa ... that would depend on your block, where your neighbours were, fences etc. If we'd had a window as a splashback we'd just have had the side fence there, plus most window splashbacks have a range-hood above so they're not that high. From a privacy point of view, a lot of the time there's going to be a fence stopping the neighbours from peering in. But ... depends on the block, house-positioning etc. Re: Having second thoughts on clear glass splashback 9Dec 23, 2014 7:44 am We have a window splashback, cook every night and is no different to clean than any other splashback and in fact sits further back than a regular splashback. The only real difference is you need to clean the outside now and again. Can't help with the privacy/safely side of things I think it's probably quite dependant on what's immediately around you. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Having second thoughts on clear glass splashback 11Dec 23, 2014 2:06 pm Thanks all! I think I am just paranoid with security. Our neigbours are families - one family with 7 children! I think privacy is not so much an issue, but I am just freaking out about the dark, and security. We are thinking we will get an electric shutter installed....will come in handy especially when we are travelling away from home.
