Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Jul 24, 2012 8:23 pm Hi all. I am a carpenter with 8 years experience as a tradesman and have built 2 new homes as an owner builder. I want to persue my builders licence, but am not sure who to do it through (ie. TAFE, Master Builders, HIA etc). Can anyone provide me with advice on this and also how long it will take? Thanks. Re: Best way for carpenter to get builder's licence? 2Jul 24, 2012 9:11 pm It seems that the most common way to obtain a builders licence is to qualify and obtain 1. Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) 2. Diploma of Building and Construction Either of these seem to be a pre-requisite to obtaining a licence. HIA or master builders will help you through the process which normally starts with a interview with them to determine experience then they will set out a plan of coarse's/certificates for you to accomplish to then apply to the building commission. there are also people who specialise in helping you personly which is quite exspensive but the process is a lot quicker and personal. i have a number for a lady in victoria if you want to try her. Re: Best way for carpenter to get builder's licence? 6Oct 15, 2012 10:00 am HIA or Master builders is quickest way to get it, you will finish it in 3 months, however it will put you back for $7-8,000 but part time tafe is 2 years and will cost about 2k. But i have a real concern about all these builders that finish those courses through HIA and Master Builders, i think that gov is making big mistake for allowing this to happen. I know many people that have finished this course recently, and are now so called "Builders" I've done my course through tafe 7 years ago, and honestly i can tell you that you learn about 10% about building and running your own company, once you finish and get your licence you have no idea what is out there. Being a builder is one of the hardest jobs out there and with so much responsibility that you cant imagine what will hit you. No wonder there is so many bad builders out there. Builder courses are a way too short and brief, Gov. knows this but let it go because they are trying to encourage people to do it, but real builder course should be 4 years full time. Just my 2 cents.
