Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Apr 27, 2009 5:25 pm Hi there, long time lurker, first time poster I have a double bay window in my home. Its our meals area, that we once had a small 4 seater round table in. I have since gotten rid of it (after 5yrs) and really prefer the open space. It looks out into our backyard and having 2 young boys who love the outdoors, i'd like an area for me to sit and supervise aswell as relax (or be in the kitchen cooking and cleaning) The windows currently have verticals and im not really looking to change that any time soon. I have been asking my hubby to build me a window seat for some time. He's not a carpenter (a control system engineer infact) but he's pretty handy (built our timber pergola) and he has finally given me the ok. I want to be storage aswell, and have flip top lids and have some cushions for comfort and softness. Now, im not sure if its a large/difficult job. Im not sure what i want it to look like. Im not sure about alot of things, just that i want a window seat LOL Here are some pics to help you get the idea of the space and its surronds. The christmas tree no longer resides there http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s99/RonaFletcher/Our%20Home/DSCF6517.jpg With the old meals table http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s99/RonaFletcher/Our%20Home/DSCF5559.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s99/RonaFletcher/Our%20Home/DSCF5560.jpg From the outside http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s99/RonaFletcher/Our%20Home/DSCF6208.jpg Adjoining Family room - the blue couch has been replaced by a suede camel lounge http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s99/RonaFletcher/Our%20Home/DSCF5566.jpg And Kitchen (scuse the mess) - meals area is on the direct left http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s99/RonaFletcher/Our%20Home/DSCF4021.jpg Any help, tips ideas would be greatly appreciated. I wanted something actually attached to the wall, under the window. I've seen those sites before to do list. Thank you. Im still at a loss MummaMia Busy Mummy to 2 little men Re: Double Bay Window Seat 5Apr 29, 2009 4:45 pm Here is a couple of pics of a window seat i built for a client. She tells me if she ever had one built again she would have draws in the front rather than the lift up panel I'm putting 3 window seats into my new place (drafting stage at the monent) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Ben Buildersedge Pty Ltd LEADING THE WAY IN BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION BUILDERSEDGE PTY LTD Re: Double Bay Window Seat 6Apr 29, 2009 4:55 pm Ben, can I ask how much you charged to build that one? I am after something similar only it'll be about twice as long, in a box bay window. Would drawers be more expensive again? thanks in advance "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. I guess draws would be more exxy, but a rather handy idea (i have this fear with 2 young children that they'd suffocate in a 'toy box' type thing... i know they wouldnt, coz im too padantic about it) I'd be interested in hearing the cost too... just as a ball park. MummaMia Busy Mummy to 2 little men Re: Double Bay Window Seat 8Apr 29, 2009 5:22 pm As there was a space allocated for this during construction, it was relatively inexpensive from my side of the fence. If you where starting from scratch and didn't have a space, change windows and modify walls etc, it could run into being abit expensive. Just looked back throught my quotes here and that window seat all framed up with plaster and paint was around $600, the client made the large cushion herself and added the throw cushions. It was built that way to keep costs down, if we had of gone to draws, with runners, draw fronts to match kitchen, handles and labour content to construct, it could of run up somewhere near $2000 Feel free to ask anymore questions. cheers Ben Buildersedge Pty Ltd LEADING THE WAY IN BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION BUILDERSEDGE PTY LTD Re: Double Bay Window Seat 9Apr 29, 2009 5:49 pm Not bad! What do you reckon about my space? (photos in OP) I dont want it plastered, just have decorative skirting and panels. Im awaiting a quote atm, but i think the people are a bit... ummm... silly! MummaMia Busy Mummy to 2 little men Re: Double Bay Window Seat 10Apr 29, 2009 9:16 pm Yours looks to be an easy build really: Frame up Line with lining boards Install draws/whatever Install Architraves/skirtings Fill nail holes Paint Add cushions etc Finish Let me know if i can help further? Ben LEADING THE WAY IN BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION BUILDERSEDGE PTY LTD Re: Double Bay Window Seat 11Apr 29, 2009 9:18 pm thanks for that Ben. If you weren't in Gippsland I'd get you to come and do mine! In ours the window structure is already there, it's just a bit longer than the one you did - 1.5m I think. I'd be happy with a toy box arrangement to save $1400 or so... "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house.
