I have a crack in my first floor shower recess floor. Am looking to have the entire floor redone, finally getting rid of the horrible existing tiles.

I have never attempted a bathroom reno. Though not an entire reno, am looking at not only the floor but shower recess, vanity and toilet. Any tips or hints? Anyone had something like this before? Does someone co-ordinate everything (tiler, plumber etc)?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Have received a quote to have my bathroom floor taken up and replace with FC sheeting then retiled. Quote includes refitting vanity and toilet (which I have to supply), waterproofing and removal of rubbish. Total cost of materials and labour is $4,500. I think this is a reasonable amount to me though I have never attempted a bathroom before. Have seen this guys work and he does a good job.

The toilet I have at the moment is the standard type and I was wanting to replace it with a toilet that is flush with the wall. The above quote is for changing the plumbing to accommodate this new toilet. Is this a big job to change the plumbing for this type of toilet? Or should I just go with a new standard type of loo? Someone told me that some toilets are bolted to the floor and that I should ensure I get one that is concreted to the floor. Whats the difference? Are some loos only meant to be bolted down? Do I need to ask how it is fixed before I buy one?

Would appreciate any help or advice on this matter.

By the time you remove and refit the vanity and toilet, you may as well get a new vanity and toilet. It will only add $1,000 to the price if you don't move the plumbing.. i.e. full renovation.

Otherwise you'll be kicking yourself later.

stratastruggler- it is a big job to replace the toilet to a wall hung toilet.

Or did Stratastruggler mean the newer streamlined style that sits on the floor up against the wall (easier to clean around ) rather than one that hangs off the wall (even easier to clean around )?

No I didn't mean the wall hung type of loo. Just the one that sits on the floor but backs onto the wall.

The amount of work you are going to do you'd be better off stripping out the whole bathroom and starting from scratch.
For a start you have to waterproof 150mm up from the floor at least which means cutting into the tiles and sheeting on the walls.
I'd hate for you to do all this work only to have the walls look decidedly ordinary compared to the rest of the bathroom once you have finished.

Thanks for that Stewie. The bathroom guy did say he would have to remove the lower wall tiles to do the job properly, going about 200mm up the wall with the waterproofing. He has done some other bathrooms this way. He does a border or floor tiles along the bottom of the wall. My wall tiles are in good nick and are a great colour too. And, being in strata, if I did the walls would probably have to get the full permission thing happening. But in my townhouses, the floor, waterproofing and tiles are the owners responsibility. So only have to give notice that I am getting this done.

Have seen some bathrooms done in this way with the border tiles and they look good. Providing you pick the right colour floor tiles I would think. Thanks again for your feedback. At least it confirms for me that this guy really does know what he is talking about!
