Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Feb 17, 2010 4:17 pm Hi there, We have our bathroom being renovated at the moment and this is the first stage of a major reno that we plan to undertake to our Post War home in Brisbane. I've been speaking with friends about the job thats being done and each time I do I'm concerned with some things that are being done. The project manager seems ok but hes not exactly responsive. (I'm not really sure what to expect from a PM for a bathroom place for a job thats taking 2 weeks.. should I expect a call 1-2 times a week to ask if we're happy ?) Anyway, the problems I'm keen to get some feedback on are; The plumber has place the plumbing access point thingy right in the middle of our path down the side of the house because apparently that makes good plumbing sense. Unfortunately it doesnt make good safety sense. When I asked the Project Manager about it, he said it wasnt in it's final position and would be sorted later (final day is Friday). But a builder mate told me it has to be above ground level so they cant lower it... The bath has a deck on the front face of it that the tiler wasnt too happy with because there was a gap between the gyprock and the bath and he said he wasnt happy signing off on it for water proofing. so the builder came back and place some more sheets down and under the bath lip so now the tiler will tile into the side of the facing lip and silicon it. When I spoke with some people they told me that the tiler should have tiled under the lip of the bath. whats standard practice for baths that have a deck ? The vanity was put in at the same time as the floor tiles ie. there are no floor tiles under the vanity or on the wall behind it. now I'm sure once its all finished you wouldnt be able to tell but again, whats the norm.. tile under and behind a vanity and then put it in ? There's no problems with tiles we have heaps and its only a small room... any ideas why they'd do this ? The tiler water proofed everything but only applied the blue waterproofing in the joints and mails holes around the shower bath. A person has tole me that they should have done it for all the sheeting for the area immediately around the shower output... again have they cut corners ? The removalists have scratched and dinged the timber floor a bit when they removed the old cast iron bath... the PM mentioned they'd probably have to get someone out to look at the floor and get that section sanded and polished again. but we're not too keen on that because it needs to be done all at once for the entire part of the house otherwise it might be noticeable. should we just be asking for some $$ off and we'll polish the whole section later on ? Sorry for the waffle.. any tips would be greatly appreciated. The new bathroom still looks great and I'd hate to be seen as whinging, its just that we're not sure what to expect. Our bath hob was tiled before the bath went in and then siliconed around the edge....but in our old house, the bath went in first, and we had no issues with leaks. That bath got used a LOT too. relliksalta The vanity was put in at the same time as the floor tiles ie. there are no floor tiles under the vanity or on the wall behind it. now I'm sure once its all finished you wouldnt be able to tell but again, whats the norm.. tile under and behind a vanity and then put it in ? There's no problems with tiles we have heaps and its only a small room... any ideas why they'd do this ? It's normal for the cabinets to go in first. Why tile walls that are going to be covered? Have a look at some of the building threads here and you'll see that kitchen and bathroom cabinets are almost always installed well before tiling. relliksalta The tiler water proofed everything but only applied the blue waterproofing in the joints and mails holes around the shower bath. A person has tole me that they should have done it for all the sheeting for the area immediately around the shower output... again have they cut corners ? If waterproof sheeting is used, they may only need to waterproof the joins. Some builders do it that way, others use the dark grey gunk (technical term ) over the whole area - I assume because they don't use waterproof sheeting? We've had showers done both ways and had no problems with either. Don't know the answers to your other questions, but somebody is sure to have a clue.... Re: Bathroom reno - am I just paranoid ? :) 3Feb 23, 2010 2:58 pm to fix your floor they can repair what has been damaged without redoing the entire floor. People make one happy, not houses? I do not think so. Houses are more to be trusted than people.
