Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Feb 21, 2010 9:28 pm I'm going to have to make the decision whether to have tile or have the mirror extended down to the vanity, very soon. On my plans it shows the mirror going all the way down to the vanity. I've been told I can change that. But...should I? What are your preferences?? Re: Do you prefer a tiled splashback or mirror? 2Feb 21, 2010 9:46 pm I've had both, and I have to say that I like the tile between the vanity and mirror. One because there are a lot of water specks which drive me mad, but two a colour is a nice thing to have - it breaks up the room a bit. Good luck with your choice. I've always had the tiles in between - when we organised our mirrors for our reno in Melbourne, the guy from Regency recommended the tiled gap because it is apparently very hard to keep the mirrors clean if they go right down to the vanity. On this forum, haywgl also found this out, after having had the full length mirrors installed. This is her thread: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=22325 Good luck ! Re: Do you prefer a tiled splashback or mirror? 4Feb 22, 2010 7:39 am Yep go the tiles!! I'm going to evntually get out mirrors ripped up and the tiles put in - going to be costly but much easier to maintain and look alot nicer too My karma ran over your dogma Re: Do you prefer a tiled splashback or mirror? 6Feb 22, 2010 8:38 am The other main problem is that mirrors don't like moisture. If any moisture forms behind the mirror, the silver backing will de laminate and go black. This is even a problem when you recess a mirror in a tiled wall, as you reduce ventalation the the space behind it. I would be interest to know if your builder will warrant your mirrors for this if it is tiled down the vanity top. I know my glass manufacturer will not. Cheers Charlie Re: Do you prefer a tiled splashback or mirror? 7Feb 22, 2010 8:47 am Tiles. We're actually having a whopping 40 cm of tiles under the mirror (our tiles are 40 cm high). We'll dump the mirror later on and put shaving cabinets. I like the convenience of the cabinets - hides all the small stuff, and is so easy to reach. Double the functionality. Plus, I'm used to it. Plus, less worry about water splashes. My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Do you prefer a tiled splashback or mirror? 11Feb 22, 2010 3:12 pm I voted tiles too - as I've just suddenly realised today at my tile appointment I forgot to mention at tender and I am having mirrors put in whole way down to vanity bench I'm going to ask my builders if they can move the mirrors up and put some tiling in, though if they want to charge me the $1000 changing fee I'll leave it for now and fix afterwards. Caz & Co ALL MOVED IN!! Now comes all the hard work-decorating.... Had an interesting talk with our mirror installer this morning actually. . . when I spoke to them a few weeks ago, they suggested that they use spring clips to mount the mirrors and I just agreed. . . after a little thought I called them back this morning. . . I asked if there were any other options. The guy said that I can have the mirrors glued to the walls, but they'll then be permanent fixtures and sometimes, after a few years, the mirror backing has been known to taint due to lack of airflow. I decided to go with having the mirrors glued on, as I HATE IT when you're cleaning them and the cloth gets caught in the spring clips . . . GRRRRRRRRRR! Thank you for listening. Re: Do you prefer a tiled splashback or mirror? 14Feb 22, 2010 4:53 pm I've had both before and it's another vote for tiles here Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. Re: Do you prefer a tiled splashback or mirror? 16Feb 22, 2010 6:31 pm Same as the rest Tiles for me We had it in my parents old house and I found it didnt look as nice as the other bathroom which was tiled. We found cleaning was a chore too as any little plash of water is visible RHI - BALDIVIS PERTH 2005 Bought/Finished WA Housing Centre Home 2010 Building the Benchmark with REDINK Homes in The Avalon 2013 Building the Michigan with Cont3nt Living In Highbury Estate! Re: Do you prefer a tiled splashback or mirror? 17Feb 22, 2010 6:50 pm MUch prefer the mirror all the way to the vanity but will have a row of tiles simply for maintenance reasons. Re: Do you prefer a tiled splashback or mirror? 18Feb 22, 2010 7:34 pm WOW thanks everyone I guess tiles wins lol Tiles was my preference, but thought I'd ask as most display homes I went into had the mirror all the way down to the vanity. I'll have to think of what kinda tiles now hmmmmmm Re: Do you prefer a tiled splashback or mirror? 19Feb 23, 2010 1:26 pm I think a lot of things are done in display homes to make the rooms look bigger and lighter. Mirrored kitchen splashbacks, when the kitchen is in an internal corner ....mirrored bath hobs (seriously) in small bathrooms ....lights on all the time, day or night ....skylights that are upgrades.... extra windows that'll cost you $$. It all looks lovely, but many of these will either cost you a fortune, or just won't be practical to live with.
