Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jul 04, 2022 10:54 pm I need to have a frameless shower screen installed - it involves drilling 2 holes in the tiled wall for the brackets (+silicone etc). Q - Do the installers check the location of pipes in the wall before they drill? (I don't know where the pipes are) Asking as tiler has warned me that he's seen a shower screen installer drill into a wall pipe. Thankyou Re: Frameless Shower Screen Installation 3Jul 05, 2022 9:11 am Pulse normally the builder would put noggins in for the screen and take photos prior to sheeting. the glass installer has no way of knowing where the pipes are. Thankyou Pulse. This is in a house that I have bought, so I wasn't involved in the building. (Newish nice bathroom, but no fall in shower, so, I've removed screen, had floor re-done which is now 5cm higher, so holes for screen brackets will have to be 5cm higher if I'm to reuse that screen). I can see there is a Bosch Wall Scanner at Bunnings. Maybe I need to get one of those to detect pipes/wood under the wall to see what is going on. Any thoughts on this? Re: Frameless Shower Screen Installation 4Jul 05, 2022 10:53 am Alternatively you could get a thermal camera and use it while turning on all the taps / shower / flushing toilets. It will tell you exactly if there are any pipes, etc as the temperature will be different. Flir thermal camera is a good one if you want to DIY. Alternatively, you could also hire professional to do it (around $500 per visit). Re: Frameless Shower Screen Installation 6Jul 05, 2022 1:30 pm A glass installer I'm now in contact with says this about potentially drilling into a pipe: "Yes there is always a chance however I will drill shallow on the bottom to avoid." Would you be relaxed enough going ahead with that response? The wall is tiles on gyprock. Re: Frameless Shower Screen Installation 7Jul 05, 2022 3:18 pm A few hundred bucks to find out where the pipe is located is nothing compared to the cost to rip out the whole bathroom if they drilled into the pipe. Re: Frameless Shower Screen Installation 8Aug 23, 2022 10:03 pm Oakland Projects A few hundred bucks to find out where the pipe is located is nothing compared to the cost to rip out the whole bathroom if they drilled into the pipe. Thanks for the advice. I ended up getting a tradie with a Thermal Camera to come around and detect the pipes per your suggestion. Money well spent - $385. Meant the shower screen could be reinstalled confidently - as we knew we would absolutely miss the pipe, and also I added a rail shower which we could also drill in knowing where to avoid.
