This was due to the channel grate recess being cut out after the waterproofing was completed (water proofing was re applied after the cut out and no puddle flange was first utilize, either both or one or the other compromised the waterproofing.) Our shower recess is hob-less, there is a slight step down in the shower which is approximately 15mm. This being the difference between the floor tiles inside compared to outside of the recess. The tiler has removed the floor tiles in the shower recess area and removed the first row of wall tiles, repaired the render on the walls and re screeded the floor. He will be returning shortly to cut out the recess for the channel grate, set the height for the puddle flange, touch up any areas from cutting out the channel grate, and will then bond break the corners/junctions before applying two coats of waterproof membrane. My question is, should the first row of floor tiles be removed outside of the shower recess so the waterproofing can extend past / outside of the shower recess area? The tiler thinks this is not necessary. My concern is moisture could potentially penetrate outside of the shower recess as the waterproofing can only be applied as high as the 15mm recess and i cant see how this can 100% prevent moisture getting under the screed / glue of the tiles outside of the recess. There is fall for the water to direct to the channel grate which is the opposite side of the step down and we are looking at utilizing epoxy grout this time round for extra re assurance. It does work in our benefit if we don't have to remove the tiles out side of the recess area as our replacement floor tiles are a few shades lighter than our existing bathroom floor tiles. It wont be that noticeable if its just the recess that is replaced however if we do need to replace the first row of floor tiles out side of the recess, its going to be very obvious a repair has been completed. That said, if the tiles have to be removed to be sure we wont have moisture issues again then i will no doubt have them removed before the water proofing is completed. There are standards and details for waterproofing I suggest you get them properly certified 2nd time around OT, I wouldn't be polling Tilers? $30 million in defects payouts hth Designer,Engineer (Civil,Const & Envir),Builder,Concrete & Masonry Contract.Struct Repairs Re: Attention water proofer and tilers - shower recess repai 3Sep 25, 2019 9:59 am Correct, wasn't done properly the first time. Trying to have this repaired without having to completely gut the entire bathroom. I've been advised that this can be repaired by removing the floor tiles and first row of wall tiles by an independent person to the tiler, if this is actually going to work or not i don't know. If you have a floor waste, turn on your sink and put your ear down to the central floor waste and listen. If you can hear water running then they all connect there.
