Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Oct 24, 2017 6:30 pm All advice welcome - we bought a 2-storey house with a skillion roof last year that became unbearably hot last summer. We have recycled air con in both storeys. I have been looking at ventilation systems to see if they would remove some of the heat come summer time. Problem is most seem effective for roofs with cavity spas but not flat roofs. Anyone have any success stories? Thanks in advance! Re: Cooling a two-storey house with a skillion roof 2Oct 25, 2017 9:21 am A different approach could be clerestory (highlight) windows, which will vent hot air from near the ceiling? Due to the stack effect these could be quite effective. Problem is they also leak quite a lot of heat in winter. If you require winter heating it would be advisable to have double glazed clerestories. Automation would be a good idea too, to open & close them. North facing is the best direction, so that in winter northern sun can offset some of the heat losses. South facing clerestories will lose quite a bit of heat in winter. Re: Cooling a two-storey house with a skillion roof 3Oct 25, 2017 6:18 pm Thanks for the advice - I will look into it.The room faces south and we have two sets of sliding glass doors on the north side and a set of glass doors on the south side, as well as a number of sets of louvered windows. The windows would have to go on the south side as this is the highest wall but I imagine it would be pretty costly. Was hoping to spend maybe a few thousand max since we have air con already. Anyway will see about a quote to see how much it would cost. Thanks! I might even give them a call to see if they have a rep locally who could come and provide some advice. Thanks again!
