Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Apr 29, 2016 10:55 pm Hi all, I am building with Dennis Homes and we are deciding on installing some split air conditioner units with a third party in the living room and master bedroom. We need however to specify to Dennis Homes the amount of Amps they need to prepare for this so they can get the electrician to prepare the amp switch. We intend to install 3.5kW cooling for our Master bedroom (21sqm) and 7.0kW in our living room/lounge (50sqm). I tried searching in the specs for the products, but they all do not mention how many Amps is needed. Can anyone help here please? Our third party AC business told us what we would require therefore we got our builder to install these provisions for us. We'll be installing a 8.5 or 9kw split system in our living room which is 25sqm. Our builder recommended a 32 amp which was more than enough for 9. However this is for one unit you may require another for the other one. This was Agreed on by our third party AC as well. Hope that helps and good luck on your build. Re: Help with Amp switches for Air conditioners 3Apr 30, 2016 11:44 pm 4mm cable for the 7kw a/c at least, and you may just be able to get away with 2.5mm tps for the 3.5, but just get 4mm for both. The a/c guys electrician will put in the right size CB's to suit. btw, you would have been better to post this in the heating/cooling sub forum, as I nearly missed your post being in the wrong section. Re: Help with Amp switches for Air conditioners 4May 15, 2016 8:44 am Here is a basic rule of thumb to work it out... Kw rating of the air con × 1000 ÷ 3 ÷ 240 7kw × 1000 = 7000 7000 ÷ 3 = 2333 2333 ÷ 240 = 10A (rounded up) This will be the running load of the unit (approx) Most manufacturers specify a minimum fuse/circuit breaker size. In my experience this is usually about 1.5 - 2.5 times the running load. So to be on the safe side 10a × 2.5 = 25amp circuit. (Probably 4mm2 cable or possibly larger but the electrician should work this out) Same calculation for a 3.5kW unit results in a 12.5 amp circuit being required, however there is no such thing as a 12.5 amp circuit, the next size up is 16 amp. This will need 2.5mm2 cable or possibly larger. Hope this helps.
