Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Nov 23, 2015 1:17 pm My new apartment, built in 1979, has 3 LG air conditioning units - the type that have a large flat box that sits out on the balcony or on the wall outside, and have a smaller thin unit high up on the wall, blowing cold air. The outside units are quite rusted, though the inside ones look quite new. Will some rust on the outside (around the circular centre part with the fan thingo) be a problem? Also, do these types of units have any kind of filter to clean / filter the air? I find I get sore throats and dry eyes from being in air conditioned places like offices and hotels. Will this be the same? Thanks! I don't see the small amount of rust your describing on the condenser unit outside being a problem, however if you're unsure you can always have a licensed installer take a look for you. The sore throats & dry eyes come from the humidity being pulled from the air during the operation of the air conditioner, some people seem to be affected more than others. It can also depend on the size of the unit and the room it's operating in. Running a humidifier to add humidity back into the air can decrease this and make the enviroment more pleasant for those who experience dry eyes & sore throats. Most air-conditioners have a filter on the head unit (inside) which can be taken out and washed, I'd also recommend spraying them with disinfectant before placing them back in.. A quick google with your model number should show you how to do this.
