Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jun 02, 2020 11:59 pm Hi, i've searched the internet, and found most relevant discussions to my problem here, however still not the answer i seek. I have an old Tudor Home in Williamstown, Victoria. The huge space within my roof is screaming for an Attic (and i need the space). The roof tiles sit on the rafters, however NO membrane ever installed. Very drafty in roof, and extremely dusty. I want to fully insulate between rafters, however unsure what i need. Lots of talk here about foil and Batts, and which side to have up and facing down! Id like to install.all this myself, so essentially wanting some direction. A site in UK had a thick insulation with foil on both sides of the Batts which sit in the middle of it. Is this a good option? Also noted from another site that a small space need to be left between tile and insulation to allow airflow. Is this correct. Sorry so long a message. So many questions! Was that a thing they didn't do in older buildings?? Re: Insulation between rafters - old tile roof 3Jul 30, 2020 12:46 pm In Victoria it is still not a requirement to have sarking on a new tiled roof, plenty of houses built today without. Sorry, not an answer to the original question Re: Insulation between rafters - old tile roof 4Jul 30, 2020 3:29 pm The tiles don't sit on the rafters, they sit on battens which are nailed to the rafters. The only real way to get sarking on there( whether a foil blanket or just reflective foil ) is to remove all the tiles and battens, install the sarking then nail new battens onto the rafters and relay the roof tiles again. A lot of older houses if they did have any type of building paper under the tiles had a bitumen based paper sarking that was prone to fail after twenty or so years. I'd imagine that in the lifetime of your house that the original tiles would have been replaced once maybe twice, the last time obviously without any form of sarking. Stewie Re: Insulation between rafters - old tile roof 5Jul 30, 2020 4:21 pm you will need a structural engineer as it was designed for empty space not live floor loads as to your question foilboard nailed to underside of rafters may be what you need Re: Insulation between rafters - old tile roof 6Jul 30, 2020 4:34 pm As mentioned by aussieta, unfortunately you can't use it unless a structural engineer inspect and certify it. Re: Insulation between rafters - old tile roof 7Jul 30, 2020 5:43 pm Holy crap, the first job in that roof is the get all the ducting strapped up and level (off the ceiling). If it was mine, especially because you might have decent access/height gaps on the perimeter? I would install 'perimeter batts', at least R5 or R6. Clean up all the ducting, making sure no tears in it as well. Once it is all clean, then I would buy some cheap gap filler (caulking) and seal up the small gaps between your wall plaster and the timber top plates....then finally book in an insulation installed who specialises in cellulose/blown-in and get say around R5 (from memory around 250mm depth) blown in to your entire roof space....using the perimeter batts to ensure air flow in/out of your wall cavities. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Check our Homeone build blog here Re: Insulation between rafters - old tile roof 8Jul 30, 2020 6:22 pm Thanks all for the comments. I hadnt seen many comments until recently, but wwnt ahead qith my project, at least setting up an storage space. I ended up putting a foil insulation which is some type of insulation which looks like bubble wrap. Im told this can be used as I have. Hmm. Lets see if i have done the right thing Sorry, don't know costs, but there are a couple of very important principles you need to get right (and now) .... (1) never agree to any "upgrade" unless you first know… 5 7225 Hi Kateo, Are you able to spare any of the tiles? Thanks Tony 10 11679 Your house roof does not show rusting other than some surface rust on the flashings. In my opinion you dont need to replace or paint the roof other than treat surface rust… 1 10714 |
