Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 17, 2013 4:21 pm This question could be for a gardening forum, but someone here might know. Our nature strip has white cedar trees (about 10yrs old now) planted by the Council. On the grass near the base of the tree, there are small round holes everywhere. These holes are on my front lawn as well. Over a period of time all the standard roses in my garden have died as well as a few more small shrubs. The entire lawn has these small holes as well. You can poke a stick down to China! We've dug up a really deep hole with no sign of a spider or insect? Council came to investigate & said its not the tree (so not their fault) & couldn't identify the culprit. Something seems to like this particular specie of tree as I've done an inspection of the neighbors nature strips & they are the same. Seems like they are attacking the roots of these trees maybe? Went to a nursery & they said it could be a spider but without actually catching one, have no idea what to do. Any clues would be greatly appreciated. thanks, Jazz Life is like a lolly, suck it and see Re: What's drilling holes in my lawn? 2Aug 18, 2013 1:34 pm I was going to say 'roos. They can dig a good hole - but not that deep - so not them. Re: What's drilling holes in my lawn? 3Aug 18, 2013 3:15 pm Saint Mike I was going to say 'roos. There are curl grubs which will eat the roots of grass & plants, then turn into a black beetle-the birds tend to go after them and will leave lots of holes from their beaks. They can dig a good hole - but not that deep - so not them. I'd love it if roos roamed the western suburbs of Melbourne thanks for your reply tho St Mike Well - when I lived in Canberra we had them. Now up here they're everywhere !!! It is nice to get up and see them on the golf course, ducks nearby, cranes and a multitude of other birds. And - emus - would you believe. But - no - sounds like you may have a grub problem. Re: What's drilling holes in my lawn? 7Aug 19, 2013 2:06 pm The holes are neat & round, about the width of a pencil with no sign of dirt mounds next to them You could just keep going when you poke a stick down them, they are like a long tube? I'll keep researching Thanks again for all your replies, really appreciate it. Jazz ps: would love to see roos or any wild life for that matter out my front door St Mike Life is like a lolly, suck it and see Re: What's drilling holes in my lawn? 8Sep 21, 2013 11:23 pm Sounds like black beetle, pain in the bum. Get the appropriate chemical and water in well and will solve the problem. Had them some years ago and this solved the issue. Pretty amazing as they come out of the ground after 17year almost exactly to the day that they went under ground. Good luck with your investigations. I use Tramex moisture meter and it will tell me instantly if the wall is cement sheet or plaster or masonite but most people dont have the equipment. 5 7495 it depends on the natural ground level, if they excavated their boundary wall needed to be built as a retaining wall.
