Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Feb 09, 2011 6:35 pm [*]Hey all,
Comments welcome... https://docs.google.com/drawings/edit?i ... y=CMfCsYoL Have a look at the plan I have tried to play around with using Google Docs. Ill give a quick (actually it turned out to be long) description to assist as I found it VERY hard to use the Google Docs drawing program. The rear of our house has an alfresco room which is 4mx4m. We will be decking this area with a deck almost the whole width of the house being 7mx4xm. The 1.5m of overhang deck from the alfresco we will be putting a pergola type roof with privacy slatted walls. The deck will have a 1x3m deck boardwalk to a 3x3m Bali Hut for our spa. On the garage the side of the house we will have a dog cage which is 1.8mx1.8m it will be surrounded by a grassed area. Alongside the garage will be concreted. There is also a 1m wide path around the rear of the house from the garage external access door to the laundry door. The perimeter of the rear yard will be planted with a clumping bamboo to form hedging. The remainder of the yard will mostly be planted out with a giant clumping bamboo to form a 'Bamboo Grove'. We have a 3m easement at the rear of the block that we will be using for a veggie garden and garden shed. This area will have a gravel ground cover and hidden from the rest of the yard by the bamboo hedging. The front yard will be grassed with a garden bed at the front of the block and up the side which will have some low green shrubs as well as a row of 'Capital Pear Trees' around 6 at the front and 5 up the side. The driveway will join up with the concrete area at the side of the garage. Our block is 15m by 35m. From the alfresco room at the rear there is about 11m to the back fence. The garage to the fence has a 2.4m wide space and the other side of the house to fence is 2m. Just to put a few measurements in your head. So after all that babble im open to questions and suggestions... Re: Our Landscaping Plan 3Feb 10, 2011 9:54 am Fu Manchu Not sure the whole plan is showing. Fu, From my long and tedious description... what part of the plan do you think is missing? The document uploaded to google isnt the best but it should all be there. May you tell us where the house face? It will help with the orientation. By the way, where will the clothesline ( fold down one? rotary?) You may need to consider the shadow of the fence to the vegie garden. In winter the sun is lower, Re: Our Landscaping Plan 8Feb 10, 2011 9:52 pm By the way, so you plan to use only clumping bamboo for the rear garden? I think it maybe a bit monotonous. How much have a few more varieties, like trees, shrubs, and group them to create a more interesting canvas? and your theme is baliese? How much have a few more varieties, like trees, shrubs, and group them to create a more interesting canvas? and your theme is baliese? Nott, Thanks for your input! The front of the house faces North. So shadow for the veggie garden is an issue agreed but hopefully using the bamboo as the 'screen' to hide it away will allow some sun onto it. Given that the shadow of the house will not be an issue at all. We are not clothesline people so we wont have one. Although there is space down the side of the house near the laundry door. We will of course have some other plantings in the rear yard along the lines of gingers and lilies most probably along the boardwalk and on the side of the house near the dog cage facing out windows near the rendered sheeting wall. If you haven't experienced a real bamboo grove I can see how you come up with the thought of it being monotonous. It is really an experience, so calm and peaceful and awe inspiring to be in the middle of towering bamboo. Obviously ours wont get as tall but it will defiantly simulate the effect we are after. Don't be fooled but the use of the 'Bali Hut' as pointing the direction as balinese. Its more to simulate a structure in a tropical bamboo area. NO EXPECTATIONS, NO DISAPPOINTMENTS! They will grow, just slower & might drop their foliage in winter. That might be a bit much bamboo though. Giant bamboo around your balinese style hut would look good (would keep you shaded!), but perhaps something else for the side screening? Hey KerryF We will be getting our bamboo from Red Cloud Bamboo here in Melbourne. I have already met with the guy who runs the place and he has explained the climate limitations on the species we have selected. So we are fully aware of all that stuff. What did you have as a suggestion for screening the fence? NO EXPECTATIONS, NO DISAPPOINTMENTS! Do you want to screen what's behind the fence, or just hide the fence itself to break it up a bit? Your house faces north right? You seem to be going mainly subtropical in look (bamboo, gingers, lillies) is that the type of theme you want to continue? You seem to be going mainly subtropical in look (bamboo, gingers, lillies) is that the type of theme you want to continue? It will be slightly sub tropical agreed. The use of the thicker bamboo to hedge/screen is to sort of give a thick backdrop look to the giant bamboo. Giving the grove/forest impression on a small scale. Our fences are of regular height 1.8m. And im guessing to hid a bit more of the neighbors roof line wont hurt! NO EXPECTATIONS, NO DISAPPOINTMENTS! (North point usually pionts up the page) Not a biggy but we do need to know where north is - Nott was assuming your veggy patch was going to be shaded by your house in winter. Great to see someone with a clearly defined concept of what they want. You have the vision so I am sure you will get there. You are doing the right thing too by putting it on paper and getting feedback. Most designs do evolve a bit from the initial concept, I think the bamboo grove idea is great. Due to the natural walling effect of the culms I reckon you could hide/ partially hide another outdoor room somewhere amoungst the culms as a reading area/ garden retreat, possibly with water of some sort. A scupture of some sort somewher in the bamboo grove is a must too for mine. Be wary of the shade cast by the bamboo regards the veggy patch too. Checkout some Tiger grass for a bit of variety mixed in. Re: Our Landscaping Plan (now attached) 16Feb 14, 2011 1:44 pm keen Front of house faces north - your plan is upside down! As for a so the thought on another outdoor room, I have had thoughts as it would really be hidden and a nice place for some peace and quite in 'nature'! Sculpture is on the wish list also! Im looking at Tiger Grass as I type! Cheers. NO EXPECTATIONS, NO DISAPPOINTMENTS! It's a dense clumping palm to about 3m tall, cold tolerant, great for screening. It likes a sunny, moist, well drained position, but will need shade when young. It will break up the view of the fence, add to the tropical look and of course block out a bit of that roofline. You can try several different palms, mixed with things like Canna (Indian Shot Plants), gingers, monstera to continue your tropical feel. I've just done a very long post on palms for Melbourne, so you can have a look there and see if there's anything that takes your fancy Re: Our Landscaping Plan (now attached) 18Feb 14, 2011 11:56 pm I would design some pathways through the bamboo grove, to create a walking trail past / to the features in the yard (sculpure, water feature?, garden retreat, temple?, vege patch etc) Maximise the grove concept. Make sure you have listed and included all the features you want and need in the yard - good design is both functional and aesthetic. (cooking area?, spa?) Dont need to have a full lighting plan but may want to consider a rough one so that you can drop in conduit etc during construction. Irrigation too. Though, if you have the creativity and time, I would instead create some mysterious ancient ruins throughout the grove. An intact pillar here, a broken pillar there, a half buried broken statue or wall somewhere else... I'd definitely go more informal with a bamboo grove, ensuring that the paths were 'natural' and worn by walking feet rather than built, twisting through the bamboo.
