Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 05, 2013 10:46 pm Hi, My yard is not level at all and has about 5-6 different types of grass growing in it at the moment. I'm looking to level it all out and then re-turf the whole area. I'm not sure of the best way to deal with the old grass; - One person has said to just leave it (don't even worry about killing it) and put our topsoil down and lay Kikuyu, suggesting that Kikuyu would be the more dominant variety and would give us the best chance at having a quality lawn for as long as possible without regular maintenance removing other varieties when they start to grow in parts (I'll do my best, but am worried I won't keep up... as I said - there's already 5-6 types in there) - I personally thought I should at least round up the existing lawn, but should I then rip it up somehow and remove it? Or can I just put topsoil over the top? Or till it? Looking for advice on the full process because I'm a complete novice. As far as varieties of grass go, I was going to go with Kikuyu regardless of others advice, but does anyone else have a suggestion? I live in Western Sydney with temperatures reaching 40 in Summer and 0 on the coldest nights in Winter. Would wake up to regular frost; however this year that was rare. The entire lawn would get sun throughout the day, and drainage isn't the best. A square area of around 4m x 3m would be shaded for around half a day. Kikuyu and Couch seem quite cheap, but happy to spend the extra for buffalo if suitable. Thanks for any assistance. Re: Levelling and re-turfing - removal of old grass? 2Nov 06, 2013 7:57 am You could hire a turf cutter, I've never used one before but they look like they'd do it pretty quickly. A quick google search shows a picture on the kennards web site: http://www.kennards.com.au/index.php?fuseaction=product.view&productid=223 Re: Levelling and re-turfing - removal of old grass? 3Nov 06, 2013 12:10 pm You'd struggle to keep any lawn variety green during sustained periods of 40c regardless of how much soil prep was undertaken. I'd like to be proven wrong on this - if anyone has any comments i'd like to hear 'em. Your Buffalos, Kikuyus etc will all struggle during intense dry periods without frequent heavy watering As for shade, forget Kikuyu. Hates shade. I'd go Sir Walter or any of those fancy new Buffalo types if money wasn't an issue. Re: Levelling and re-turfing - removal of old grass? 4Nov 07, 2013 5:35 pm Thanks. I think I'll look at a full job, removing existing turf with a turf cutter depending on how expensive hire of one of those machines actually is. Planning now to get all my removal, levelling and prep done on one weekend, then get my planned continuous concrete garden edging done mid-week, followed by turf laying the weekend following. If anyone else has any other comments, happy to hear them.
