Is that some kind of mesh/fabric/plastic material against the walls? And is that you in the pics? that is a mesh to protect the wood, not plastic as that would hold the water in on the wood. that is my DH in the pics. They have bowed a bit since installation but I figure its going to be a native yard with lots of plants - I'm not going with a millimeter perfect modern look so a bit of bowing won't hurt. This was the cheap option at around $2000 total. Blocks would have been around $6500 total. Re: Show me your retaining walls! 114Dec 15, 2010 10:25 am Thanks - yeah all DIY. I made quite a few mistakes including making the posts 3m apart instead of 2.4 which would have reduced the warping but generally it should stand up for quite a while. I put the correct drainage in and the posts are half in half out so it will still be okay. Not sure what it would have cost me for a landscaper - they would do a better job but I'm guessing the cost would have been prohibitive. The stairs are 290mm deep and 165mm high. They seem quite comfortable to walk on (I still need to back fill them but that will be with some decroative type of gravel). I bolted them using galv angled brackets rather than using a spine up the middle which is how most people would probably do it. Re: Show me your retaining walls! 115Dec 15, 2010 10:29 am Looks really good, Mozzie Do you connect the drainage to the sewerage system? __________________________________________ Built Camberwell 29 with PD - Hand Over was on 22/12/10 http://ssazcamberwell29.blogspot.com/ Re: Show me your retaining walls! 116Dec 15, 2010 12:08 pm Mozzie The stairs are 290mm deep and 165mm high. Thanks, M! What a lovely work!!! Do you mean that the stairs are 2.9 m wide, I mean the width as, per the arrow that I added on this pic (the bottom step, between the 2 sides): Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Show me your retaining walls! 117Dec 15, 2010 12:37 pm Oh okay - sorry LOL. The width is 2.4m. This was mostly decided on due to that being a standard sleeper length and also I figured there were more than enough garden beds already so the steps could be very wide. SSAZ - I didn't connect the agi to any drains, just out into the yard - very naughty I know but there isn't actually much surface run off to drain. The drainage was more in case someone left a hose on the garden or something like that. So in that case I figured it didn't matter that the water would drain to the yard in a accidental situation. If there was alot of surface run off at the top level then I would have worried about it. Re: Show me your retaining walls! 118Dec 15, 2010 6:19 pm Thanks, Mozzie! Wide stairs are way better (IMO) than narrow ones (I asked so I can get the idea for how it looks like when all done). Nice! My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Show me your retaining walls! 119Dec 15, 2010 10:21 pm Here's mine, the whole project had just completed today. The old boulder wall was uneven which restricts for soil and plants, it looked like a pile of shale the builder had left behind after the cut and fill. Worstly, the 2 houses behind and the right hand side block is located higher than my house. As the result, my clay soil backyard picks up all the run offs and turned into a swamp. The wall was built in front of the exsisting boulders which saved me alot of excavation and removal cost (40m in length) plus it created a 0.5-1 meter wide garden bed for plants. Looking really good and great design too! Was it a DIY? Did you have all those drains already, before you started on these walls? Are they connected to any other pipes and where does the water finally go? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ...
