Post subject:  hardwood decking tiles
I was in Bunnings today and had a look at those hardwood decking tiles .
1metre x 1metre $70 each

Just wondering would any one use them?

Has any one used them? if so what do you think of them?

Pros and cons?

I have a concrete slab for the alfresco area 4.600x approx 8.000 would the tiles be economical to lay on the slab or would i be better off having a proper deck there?

My only concern is the slab tends to pool with water when it rains and im thinking the tiles may rot.
I did notice the smaller size hardwood decking tiles had a hard rubber base attached to the bottom of the tiles. Maybe they would be better to use. As i guess they wouldnt rot?

Hi Clath,
I do not have an answer for you however I went to Freedom Furniture shop last weekend and they had similar decking tiles lay out in their display area. Must say I was quite impressed. We will also be having a concrete slab in our Alfresco and are currently considering our options.

Thanks Jessica :) Freedom would be expensive to buy them from. How much were they anyway?

Thanks Duke . Just thought laying them would be easier than a proper deck.

We were considering using them too. I have also seen the ones at Freedom and they do look nice. I think they cost $89 for a pack of 4, which is most likely a square metre.

A few things that puts me off are;

They are quite expensive.
They feel quite bouncy to walk on.
They will still need maintenance each year such as re-staining or oiling to keep them looking nice.
Bits of food and stuff will drop underneath them which could look unsightly and attract ants. Although I suppose they could be lifted to clean underneath if necessary.

Thanks Hels_Greg :) yes 4 tiles prob make a square metre .bunnings was around $70 a square metre. So if im correct :? if i have 33 Square metres of slab to cover that would cost me $ 2,310 in tiles if purchased through Bunnings. .Me thinks :!:

It does sound like a lot, but I expect a deck would cost more. And tiling/pavers would probably be about the same. Hmmmm... we have to consider the same thing, not sure which way we will go yet.

Yes a proper deck proberly would, Dont know wether you need any other materials other than the tiles , proberly just lay the tiles and thats it,

We are about to be in a similar position (plain concrete floor for patio) and I was looking into them also.

I know your question wasn't directed to me, but we have decided to go with outdoor tiles, the large ones that are 450cm square. $20 per metre for the tiles and $40 per metre to have them laid. Total is $60 per metre installed.

Hels will be good to see how yours comes up :) is the area your going to tile undercover? if it is do you get water on the slab when it rains, that's my dilemma .. water if i tile my alfresco .

Yes the tiled area will be undercover. In an ideal world it will be a fully enclosed sunroom, but realistically it will be a roofed patio with clear cafe-style blinds. Either way it will be enclosed somehow. I want tiles that can be moped as that is how I will clean them. I have the H2O steam mop and I can get throw away mop heads for it which will be perfect :)
