Lotus maculatus.

A fantastic ground cover from the Canary Islands. very very tough and needs little water. A hell of a flower show and when not in flower has a very soft blue green colour to the foliage. I love using these in my gardens and in my actual garden. excellent in hanging baskets too.

It really is easy to grow and fast growing. It isn't invasive and isn't on any list of invasive plant problems to the best of my knowledge.

Buy it and it grows no fuss. How easy is that :)

Any idea how tall they grow up to ?

Also, is it suitable for Melbourne weather. Might be worth planting them at the natural strip instead of using lawn.

Cheers

Hey Fu - will they grow in hot dry areas - ie west coast of SA?

If so, will put on my list of 'must-haves' when I start rest of my garden?

The answer to both questions is yes they will do very well in both locations. How do I know? well the growers of ours here in WA are located in a variety of areas. most are in places that get mild to heavy frosts in early spring and also some of the hotter locations in summer.

I also learned something today about these. The one I showed in my garden is not maculatus but Lotus Berthelotii. After reading one of our plant bibles it says that it is extinct in it's native environment on the Canary islands. They do not set any fruit or seed from the flowers. All cultivated specimens are sterile.

The two grow almost exactly the same. they are only about 10cm high. I have one also amongst native violet so when the violet dies back in the summer heat the lotus takes over and the violet grows back in winter. That one has grown to about 20cm high only because it is growing over the native violet.

These are fantastic in hanging baskets too ;)

FU which one grows well with the native violet?

I think this plant would be terrific for us given we get frosts here.

I saw another very interesting orange flower? headed plant growing across the road from here today. I'll take a pic when i can. not sure if it was a flower about to open or if that was the flower. But your plant reminded me of it with the brilliant orange colour.

We had several trailing lotus' in our last garden. They put on a great show :D . I do remember some type of bug (snail??) eating all the leaves and flowers at one stage but they all grew back quickly enough.

From memory the plants got a bit unruly and were hard to remove ... very tenacious once established!
