Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 01, 2020 6:11 pm Hi all I have an 80m2 kikuyu (and a bit of other crap to be sprayed out in the coming weeks) back lawn to mow. I'm having trouble with old petrol mower and 21+ year old brush cutter and ready to take a plunge on new battery alternatives. I'd like a new battery mower and line trimmer. Budget for both is around $1000 for the pair, but open to spending more if I deem it worthwhile. I really want a steel deck mower rather than one of these all plastic ones, so that if it runs over the odd stray stone, or small kids toy its less likely to suffer catastrophic damage. It would be good to get at least 40 mins run time and being able to get a mower and trimmer that can share a battery. The sharing of a battery is not absolutely essential but seems like a good cost effective option. Any recommendations based on the above? I've considered the Ryobi 36V stuff, but despite reading quite a few positive reviews, when looking at it in the flesh none of it looks very durable. I guess I would rather extend the budget and hopefully get 10 years out of it (notwithstanding needing a replacement battery or two before then), than be looking to replace the whole kit every 2-3 years if I cheap out now. I am considering the Victa 82V range but a 2aH battery seems a bit small. I know they make a 4aH battery but haven't seen it come as a package with these mowers for the most part. If anyone has ideas, recommendations or recent experience in this space, I would love to hear it. Cheers JT Re: Battery powered mower recommendations 2Oct 05, 2020 1:43 pm I've got a Ryobi 36V mower and also a line trimmer. Our two lawns total approx 60sqm. One battery will easily handle both lawns - thick buffalo grass without needing a charge. I have a second battery for the line trimmer which does all the edges very easily with a charge every 4-5 mows. The mower is now 11 years old so I'd class it as reasonably durable. My first trimmer failed after 2 years but this one is now 9 years old. After 11 years I'm still on the original 2 batteries. Re: Battery powered mower recommendations 3Oct 06, 2020 2:08 pm I recently bought a Ryobi 36V mower. It would comfortably do the lawn size you want. I also have the 36V line trimmer with it's own battery and the 36V blower. Batteries are interchangeable and they all get the job done. One added thing with a battery mower is that you can tip the mower on it's side or completely upside down for storage and maintenance, no fuel to leak out. I was concerned about the plastic deck but apparently it's made of the same stuff as a vehicle bumper bar. Also my brother has had a Stihl battery mower for 5 years or more with no issues. If you go the battery mower think about where the batteries are stored as a garden shed in the direct sun can get hot. Re: Battery powered mower recommendations 4Oct 06, 2020 4:50 pm Thanks guys. I'll give the Ryobi range another look. As I say the bulk of reviews have been positive. As for the batteries, I think i'll just keep them inside for longetivity. That being said my Bosch 8+ year old lithium ion cordless drill batteries have lived through all conditions in a shed and still ok (could be lucky i guess). Hi We have a road close to our place and only an old flimsy wooden fence between us and the Neighbour closest to the road. Any ideas on a sound proof modular fence.
