The only place where I have added soil is around the house due to it being compacted fill once the house was built. I did the main sowing in March and mixed fertiliser in with the seed. Then fertilised again at start of April and May. If I water, I will usually add a worm juice mix (pour the worm poo into one of those weed and feed bottles you attach to the hose, works a treat). I have also done one lot of fertilising this spring. What I have found is that fertiliser and water is key. We were lucky enough to get that rain come through which really helped the spring sowing (I wasn't optimistic but had to use the seed as use by date was November).
