Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Apr 04, 2020 1:12 pm G'day everyone, I'm building a concrete slab dining table. As expected, going to weigh a fair bit more than average table, 1800mm x 900mm x 40-50mm. Whats the best way to attach powder coated steel legs? Or, could I leave it unattached as the weight won't allow it to move. Cheers Re: Attaching Steel Legs To Concrete Table? 2Apr 04, 2020 2:14 pm SamMac G'day everyone, I'm building a concrete slab dining table. You'd hate for the worst to happen and it get bumped during a dinner party and crushing the thighs of some of your guests. Anyway, I think the best way to attach would be to cast steel plates into the bottom of concrete top and then weld the legs onto the plates. Agree. I'd much rather attach them. Welding would work, but if re-locating (moving house), it could be a logistical nightmare. I've thought of attaching bolts on the pre-cast reinforcement steel, then the concrete would set around them. Then fastening with a nut on other side of steel legs. I've thought of attaching bolts on the pre-cast reinforcement steel, then the concrete would set around them. Then fastening with a nut on other side of steel legs. That would work. Drill the plates, push through the bolts and weld the heads so they are fixed in place. Then cast the plates into the top. You could then weld matching plates on the top of your legs for a bolt on solution. Re: Attaching Steel Legs To Concrete Table? 5Apr 04, 2020 3:07 pm Can I ask how you are going to support it? Is it just 4 Legs in each corner? I think you run the risk of it cracking if it isn't supported along the length. If a bolt is attached to the reinforcement mesh before pour, I assume that would minimise the risk of it cracking? However, at the moment, I haven't planned for anything to support the length of the table. As none of the DIY Concrete table projects I've been researching show the attachment of steel legs. Cheers! All depends on how you're forming it and the accuracy you need I'm forming it in melamine pre-cast. With reinforced steel mesh at the halfway point. Ideally, the threaded stud will be straight as possible. I've never heard of chemset until now, it looks like a pretty good option. Another option could be setting a rivet bolt into the concrete? Thank you! Re: Attaching Steel Legs To Concrete Table? 9Apr 04, 2020 7:32 pm SamMac MClark I'd look at either casting into the table or chemset them in later. Thank you! If you cast them in I'd suggest welding them to a plate and casting the entire plate in with the threads off that. If you chemset get a spanking new quad tip drill bit to do the holes to avoid any risk of cracking also make sure you're not drilling right where your steel reo is. Good luck and send the pics once done! Registered Building - Always happy to help where I can and simply loves the game. DM me if you need help in VIC.
