Post subject:  REPLACING BROKEN CORDS IN ROLLER SHUTTERS.

Hi all,

i need to replace a couple of roller shutter cords that appear to have broken.
they look like thin sash cords and are operated by a winder handle inside window. cord goes through a metal guide in wall and then into shutter.
has anyone attempted these?

Assuming you mean the metal wire that runs from the winder unit up to the roller?
If so, I replaced all of mine when the original steel cables began to break and fray due to kinking. I replaced it with stainless steel wire which is a lot more flexible. The actual job itself was very simple and I never had any further problems with them.
I can describe the procedure if you like.

merlin, it appears you are very aptly named!!

mine have what I woulds describe as a nylon cord approx 6mm in dia.
stainless wire would be nice permanet replacement.

I do not know how to change.
outside housing has a top box rivited on.
there was some cored still hanging out of the box inside where handle is... and kids being kids wound it in till it disappeared inside.
I guess i have some work to do.

any and all advise would be really appreciated here right now.

thank you

I can tell you how I did mine but I should point out that mine were mounted in the roof and so there was no box to worry about.
The box may be able to be unscrewed from the wall to allow access to the roller.
If it is really necessary to remove rivets this can be done by drilling them out with a Number 30 panel drill bit (standard pop rivet size).
Manually roll up the blind and clamp or prop it in the up position.
Attach the new cable to the roller in the same manner as the existing cable.
From inside, remove the winder unit, or at least the cover from the wall.
Drop the new cable down and attach to the winder roller. (Allow a few extra turns if you like.
The stainless cable is quite flexible and can be tied securely)
Wind the handle to take the load and remove the clamps or props, whichever you used.
Replace the box using self tapping screws or if you are really keen buy a pop rivet tool and some pop rivets from Bunnings. They may also sell the cable. If not there are shutter parts suppliers around on the web.

If you're not confident with this sort of project, it may be better to find a tradie to do it for you. :D

merlin,

have yet to get to do mine planning this weekend.
as it happens our elderly neighbour has some as well and one of her straps broke!
this one uses a flat strap type cord of which she had a spare.

as you described pretty straight forward but had to remove top cover by undrilling rivets.

only problem was lifted the thing off and found probably :? the worlds biggest huntsman spider hiding inside about 3 inchs from my face!!!!!!!! yeah and i was up a ladder...

fed cord through from inside using a bit of electrical cable as a lead wire( a bit of a pain), wound roller up after attaching cord (poked through hole in roller then tied knot).

all fixed!!!
:)

Glad it worked out for you. This should give you some confidence to repair your own shutters.
Oh, and by the way, watch out for great big ugly hairy spiders :)
