Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Feb 08, 2010 10:18 pm I'm attempting to paint some very old windows (1918) they lool like theyve never been painted since the house was built. The paint is probably lead based (although I'm not certain). Does anyone know what is the safest way to remove the old flaky paint? I thought about using some paint stripper then scrape it off rather than sand it off because there would be less dust created. Hmmn, the timber is very old but the windows have nice decorative architraves around them and worth restoring, I think. Re: Old flaky paint - lead based? 2Feb 08, 2010 10:22 pm You do have to be careful and I'd be wearing gloves, a mask and eye protection. Provided you don't sand it you should be OK. Paint strippers can work a treat on window frames. Just remember to be generous with the stripper. Layer it on, but don't let it dry. Sounds like you'll love the result. People make one happy, not houses? I do not think so. Houses are more to be trusted than people.
