Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Feb 24, 2018 8:28 am Hi, Am am building a small deck (6m x 3m, 600mm high) and have some questions. I will be building it above existing concrete so I am going to dyna-bolt stirrups directly to that concrete. The concrete is not level, so is it OK to "shim" the stirrups? I may also use an angle grinder to try to flatten the concrete beneath the stirrup. What should I use as shims? I am thinking of those plastic window spacers at Bunnings. Does this all sound OK? I know that I could cut out concrete and dig holes but I have a bad back and am trying to avoid having to do that. I will be using double bearers, do the joists get nailed to both bearers? I will need to cantilever my joists and the rule of thumb seems to be to cantilever no more than 1/3rd of the span. Is that 1/3rd of the actual span, or 1/3rd of the maximum allowable span for your timber sizes? i.e. if my joists span 1500 but have a maximum span of 1800, can I cantilever by 500 or 600? Can bearers also be cantilevered, and if so, is that also by a third of the span? There will be no rain protection for a year or two. Should I paint all of the deck structure to provide weather resistance? Does exposure to rain affect my choice of decking material? If I used treated pine decking I would likely paint that also. Any help appreciated.
