Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Sep 07, 2015 9:34 pm We are in the process of throwing around design ideas for building our first home in Cardinia Melbourne. My question is, I have seen a lot of alfresco area's adjoining to meals areas via a bi-fold door. As much as I love the idea of extending the interior/exterior living space Im questioning if its actually ever used that way in real life. In summer wouldn't opening up such a large area mean your inviting bugs into your home? I would imagine if we had the money the air pressure barriers like in shopping centres would eliminate this however this isnt something we would be able to afford. How do others manage this? Re: How realistic are bi-fold doors to alfresco areas? 2Sep 08, 2015 6:33 pm I had the same concerns as you regarding bugs/rodents if we had an outdoor kitchen/bbq. I am planning to either have sliding doors, insect screens or anything similar around the alfresco area. This would keep bugs/rodents away and would make the alfresco "part" of the house. Re: How realistic are bi-fold doors to alfresco areas? 3Sep 08, 2015 6:58 pm We had bi-folds with retractable screens. These were great if people weren't going in and out (seems a bit silly when you write it down). They did let a huge amount of air in and looked fantastic. Couldn't afford to do them as a corner stacker in this house. Using my LG-G4 to bring you this update. Re: How realistic are bi-fold doors to alfresco areas? 5Sep 08, 2015 11:33 pm I much much prefer sliding doors over bifold doors for this reason, i hate bugs! Stacker sliders with fly screens would be a nice comprimise for very large openings. Our living has double sliders and they work well. Think we might stick with the stacker doors Re: How realistic are bi-fold doors to alfresco areas? 7Jun 29, 2016 3:57 pm If your concern is insects, there are solutions to screening bifold doors. You could opt for retractable flyscreens or pleated flyscreens that tuck away out of site when you don't need them and you simply pull them across when you have the doors open.
