Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Dec 06, 2012 4:27 pm We're building a couple of planter boxes... some of which are close to our neighbour's wall. Does any one know if 1) waterproofing needs to be done for planter boxes in general? 2) we HAVE to waterproof the planter boxes to protect our neighbour's wall (other than to be a good neighbour and to keep em happy)? Re: Planter boxes - do they need to be waterproofed? 2Dec 06, 2012 11:23 pm Most planter boxes get waterproofed in some way. The builder I work for waterproofs the inside of rendered planter box from the footings up to about 150mm from the top. By doing so, it stops the moisture from coming thru and destroying your painted rendered exterior. We use a product called Dampco by Crommelin. You can get a 4 lire bucket from Bunnings for about $20. A 4 litre bucket will cover approx 4 square meters consisting of two coats. 2 Re: Planter boxes - do they need to be waterproofed? 3Dec 08, 2012 9:53 am ^^^ Exactly what we used to do as well for the same reasons. I have seen countless masonry retaining walls built without waterproofing behind with all the render and paint being destroyed after only 5-6 years. As an aside, any brick planter box will also suck up gallons of water that you are irrigating your plants with so by waterproofing it you will dramatically cut down your water usage in those areas. Stewie Re: Planter boxes - do they need to be waterproofed? 4Dec 13, 2012 6:48 pm ^ thanks so much for your replies. Much appreciated! Re waterproofing helping to reduce the water usage... that would similarly apply to planter boxes made from limestone? Re: Planter boxes - do they need to be waterproofed? 6Dec 14, 2012 1:57 pm ^Ah..... thanks very much for that! Re: Planter boxes - do they need to be waterproofed? 7Jan 24, 2014 12:07 pm If Dampco was used in the render itself do you still need to waterproof inside where the render isn't? The render comes down 2-4 courses (double course) Just asking as means we would need removed ALL of sand from the planterboxes to do so need make sure its necessary Re: Planter boxes - do they need to be waterproofed? 8Jan 24, 2014 12:39 pm It would depend on where the planter boxes are located and the material that it is made from. Another good product is drizoro. You need to paint all the wall Leanne R ( and the base too for good measure ). You can't waterproof half a wall or at least not successfully anyhow. Stewie Re: Planter boxes - do they need to be waterproofed? 11Feb 08, 2014 11:18 am There is no base??? What actually happens if you don't waterproof inside?? Re: Planter boxes - do they need to be waterproofed? 13Feb 03, 2015 6:32 pm Hi, I've been told that i will need to waterproof my parapet wall at my garage. The parapet wall will be located at the boundry line with the neighbour. Do you know what waterproofing agent i should be using? Ask the council if there is a chance of getting build over easement exemption. Sometimes easements are unused and 24cm is not all that much. Good luck.
