Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Apr 07, 2010 10:28 am Hi All, Quick question I hope someone can answer for me please? Can you simply deck over an existing concrete slab? ie, lay your bearers the joists over the top? Have a traditional single car garage ( 6.0m x 3.4m ) Thinking about converting it to an outdoor room which would include decking the floor. Does this idea have any merit? And for those concerned that I will be losing a garage ....... have no fear, we are planing to re-build a new one further up the drieway Interested in your thoughts! Cheers! Re: Can u deck over existing concrete slab? 3Apr 07, 2010 11:25 am yep can be done. i did it not too long ago in an alfresco area - been there for just under a year now and had no problems. the only drama i have had is when the dogs get food between the cracks and it sits literally an in underneath and ants may get to it. i pretty much ran the joists, stuck down with glue and used mungoes to bolt them in to the slab, then ran the decking over the top of it. pending how far your decking is, watch the colour underneath as if it's fairly visible it may ruin the look you want to achieve. ours was very dark so no dramas but i've seen it done with a light grey slab and in full sun you get glimpses of it - might be worth a quick coat of black paint and a roller. cheers Jay Re: Can u deck over existing concrete slab? 4Apr 07, 2010 8:24 pm We completed ours today. The whole process (DIY) took 6 weekends, and was very tricky in places, but saved us heaps of money on getting a man in! We used wide plank no nail decking boards and screwed the 'Deck Ties' into joists which were bolted to the slab. Our biggests 'issues' arose as the slab was far from completely level, and many of the boards and joists were bowed making it very challenging. Not something we would do ourselves in a hurry again, but once it's stained and has all the furniture on it, no one will ever know there are a few things that are not quite right! (which I don't find most guests doing!!!! ) Sleven Moved into our Atlantique MkII 36 by Carlisle Homes Re: Can u deck over existing concrete slab? 7Apr 08, 2010 7:47 am Hi All, thanks for the comments. Was very interested in your thoughts. Cheers! Good point about the food scraps & the colour of the slab coming through jayw, awesome looking deck stormy, well done! I will have to take a good look at the slab to see how flat it is. On face value it appears quite good. Would be a job I would love to do myself. Would find it very rewarding! Now that I have a better understanding as to the decking possibilities, my attention will need to be directed to the rest of the structure. After all, how do you make a 50's single car garage (angled flat roof) into a outdoor room without making it look like a school shelter shed!! I would love to have the skills to build a deck like that but wouldn't know where to start! No special skills required, just a bit of research, lots of time, measure twice and cut once! draco76 Sorry to dig up an old thread but I am about to do the same thing and looking for some ideas. what its that no nail wide plank called? It's basically called no nail or nail free decking boards. Ours is Merbu and 140mm wide. If you google 'no nail decking' there's plenty of info! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! What did you secure the joists with to the concrete? Just L shape galv brackets, then dyna bolted? Sound like the go. I'd also look to pack the joists off the concrete a bit in case of moisture. Might also be good to use treated timber. Re: Can u deck over existing concrete slab? 14Aug 05, 2011 4:40 pm Looks fantastic, we will be doing the same on our alfresco to bring the heights up to the internal floor height for wheelchair access. I hope our comes up looking as good! Just made the deck mover the slab. Re: Can u deck over existing concrete slab? 17Aug 09, 2011 9:10 am About the pooling, the area is quite covered by the alfresco roof. Of course sideways rain will still get in but the advice was to use plastic window packers to raise the joists so if any water does come under it shouldn't rot the joists. Looks great mate, my house is just finished and I am looking to do a deck above my alfresco, no idea where to start, what tools needed, but I have the confidence that I can do it with the help of experience people. Re: Can u deck over existing concrete slab? 19Sep 09, 2012 10:10 am urk697 Looks great mate, my house is just finished and I am looking to do a deck above my alfresco, no idea where to start, what tools needed, but I have the confidence that I can do it with the help of experience people. Can you please tell me what tools I need and how to start. Thanks. Hi there urk697, Have you had any experience in any form of wood work/carpentry before? Hubby has made quite a few pieces of furniture before, so building the deck (although time consuming) wasn't too much of a challenge, but it was weeks in the planning before we even got started. We did it all with just the 2 of us. Probably the most important tools we used was a tape measure, a drop saw, a spirit level, a cordless screw driver and a rubber mallet. But along the way there were many others we used that we already had. The most important thing to do is to measure out your space, decide exactly how you want it to look and draw it all out on paper or computer program. Once it's all measured and drawn up you have to decide what materials to use, how much to get depending on how much you need, and find the most competitive price! If you want to know exactly how we did it, I'll have to get Hubby to write up the explanation. But the most valuable advice I can give you it to measure twice (if not 3 times...) and cut once! There might be some 'how to' vids on youtube for a rough guide to get you started. Cheers. Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!!
