my kitchen bench is 2460 mm long and 900 mm wide with 600mm cupboards underneath and 300mm overhang. I had many quotes for 20 mm thick stone. One stone mason mentioned that 300mm overhang part is a little bit much for a 20mm thick stone. The stress resistance of the material would be on the limit. He said we can avoid the problem with a substrate. In this case the cabinetmaker need to install a melamine all around on the kitchen bench and that we should have a 40mm miter edge everywhere to hide that melamine. Only one stone mason had above concern and no one else mentioned that. Will appreciate any opinion / help on this. thanks Re: 300mm kitchen bench overhang with 20mm thinck stone 2Jan 24, 2012 8:07 am Sounds very similar to our design. Our kitchen bench will be 2.4m long and 1m wide. The advice to us is that a 300mm overhang will be fine but it shouldn't be any more than that. So we will have extra deep cupboards on the kitchen side (they are usually 600mm but we will have 700mm). The 300mm overhang has been discussed with both our architect and the kitchen cabinet maker and neither of them raised any concern at this. We are having Essastone but don't think that makes any difference as we were originally looking at Caesarstone with the same overhang. A bank is a place that will lend you money only if you can prove that you don't need it... 300mm kitchen bench overhang with 20mm thinck stone 7Jan 26, 2012 10:01 am Our 20mm stone bench over hangs 460mm from the cupboards but the builder installed a board underneath it do the over hang is effectively only 100mm. If you want I can take a picture and attach it. I would be concerned about a large over hang with 20mm and if we had known about the board underneath we might have gone for 40mm stone instead. You can't easily see it but I know it's there. This reference states that a 300 mm overhang is acceptable: http://www.uhny.com/pdf/caesarstone_tech_datasheet.pdf However, this reference states a 200 mm is the maximum: http://media.caesarstoneus.com/pdf/CS_TDM_0511.pdf The first reference is dated 2005 and the second dated 2010. So, when my house was being build, 300 mm overhang was allowed. I suspect conservatism has stepped in and now 200 mm maximum is recommended. In either case, I would never stand on the overhang. Chatz Re: 300mm kitchen bench overhang with 20mm stone 14Jan 27, 2012 6:17 am Does it make a difference if you have waterfall edge as you then have support for the 300mm overhang on each edge?? Re: 300mm kitchen bench overhang with 20mm stone 15Jan 27, 2012 9:23 pm thanks chatz. kdgirl - waterfall edge will have support only at the end. stone's manual says that any overhang more than 200mm should have some supports underneath at some regular distances. Re: 300mm kitchen bench overhang with 20mm stone 19Apr 28, 2012 6:32 pm deb17 We have 200mm overhang on ours. I have seen Henley Homes with ones that hang over much more than ours. I would say 400mm. does that henley homes with 400 overhang has 20mm stone? Thanks Ardo, they are sort of semi concealed. I think it is only a few millimetres. I see if they can adjust the hinges. 4 4017 In the end, two pieces of treated timber (20mm thick) were bolted onto the joists and planed when there was too much sticking out.
