Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jun 25, 2022 5:32 pm Hello, does anyone recognise this product used to attach this benchtop? This is in a duplex built in 2011 so I'd expect it to be safe but unfortunately we've found asbestos positive sound deadening pads used under the sink. Re: product used to attach Stone bench top 2Jun 25, 2022 5:34 pm That didn't attach, while I work that out it looks like a thick yellow paste, similar to if you tinted spakfilla yellow. And it's just used in a few places. Thanks Re: product used to attach Stone bench top 4Jun 25, 2022 7:49 pm It's epoxy. It's used to glue the top down and provide support on the joints. How did you ascertain that the sound deadening on the sink drainer is asbestos? I had an asbestos testing company come out and take a sample, came back positive. We had a similar product in a much older unit, never thought it'd show up again in a place built 11 years ago. Well and truly illegal to be using by then. Here's a photo of it out of interest: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: product used to attach Stone bench top 6Jun 25, 2022 8:27 pm djpalmer88 chippy It's epoxy. If it is a cheap Chinese import I could possibly imagine it but I would not expect that from any reputable big name sink producer. Fortunately I would expect it to be fully encapsulated in the rubbery product so the risk factor would be incredibly low unless it was disturbed but it is extraordinary that in this day and age asbestos is still finding it's way into products Accessible Carpentry & Cabinets accessiblecarpentry@gmail.com accessiblecarpentry.com.au https://www.facebook.com/pages/Accessible-Carpentry-Cabinets/583314911709039 Re: product used to attach Stone bench top 7Jun 25, 2022 8:35 pm chippy djpalmer88 chippy It's epoxy. The leading theory is Chinese import, the sink is a Radiant (bunnings brand) that doesn't come with sound insulation so someones slapped these on it after buying it, which is why I'm a bit concerned about other products used in the place. Unfortunately one of the pads had fallen off and broken up a bit and the asbestos tester was just breaking off pieces with his hand like a maniac, reckoned the concentration would be very low, but at the time I'm not sure he even believed it'd come back positive. Not a great experience all round. 4 9274 Old Home Restoration / Renovation Cheers mate! This is exactly what I was thinking but wasn't sure if it was something I'd find on the shelf.
