Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 23, 2017 4:59 pm Hello, I'm building a house and am torn on where to position our kitchen sink. The island is 800 x 2870. The sink will take up about 800mm. If the sink is centered we will have about 1m on each side. I do worry that we might wish we had one section that was larger to work with and sink off to the side. Would love to have some opinions on what you have done/would do in my situation. Thanks Re: Where to position sink in kitchen island 2Mar 23, 2017 6:06 pm Personally I would offset the sink towards one end of the bench top. I would personally do the middle if there is no dishes out on the counter then you should have enough room for food prep Re: Where to position sink in kitchen island 5Mar 24, 2017 1:34 pm 1000mm is not that large for food prep especially if cooking for a family. If you set the sink in 300-500mm from one end it allows you to stack easily. Remember some people wash up into the second bowl and don't need heaps of room on both sides of the sink. It is a double sink without a drainer. I did;t want the drainer to minimise my prep area. We have a dishwasher so I don't end up with a huge amount of dishes drying on the island. When I do I usually place them in a portable dish drainer from Howards storage behind the tap (if that makes sense). If I only have a couple of small items I will wash and rinse in the one sink and place the drainer (came with sink) over the second sink. If I ever get around to placing the sink in the walk in pantry I will wash up there instead Re: Where to position sink in kitchen island 7Mar 27, 2017 3:09 pm I think we will leave it in the centre. My husband and I are often in the kitchen together both prepping dinner so I think for us it is best if we can have a side each to work on. Thanks for sharing how you manage dishes dolphinblu. We have asked the plumbing people to include an accessory kit with our sink (metal drainer, rack, cutting board) which i think will help us manage the space better. We don't hand wash much and right now we have 2 sinks and only really use one of the sinks anyway so utilising the space on top of the second sink when necessary should work fine.
