HI,

We are almost at the pre handover stage of our build but I am increasingly concerned at the quality of paint work done on our house.

The painters initially started on the house, then left for about a month or so and returned this week for two days and basically just did a second stain coat on our doors and painted the downpipes etc.

However, wood supporting beams in our alfresco and our rear garage door only had one coat of paint the first time the builders were at the house, and they have finished up without returning to do any more coats on those areas.

I can see bits of steel on the door - the same gaps that were there a month ago.

Is this common for a painter to try and get away with just one coat of paint?

We had an independent inspection done a few weeks ago and it was noted in a defect list that the paint was light inside the house and possibly required an additional coat. The builder says they have fixed all the defects but they definitely have not done any more coats.

Also, the paint on pipes etc and the meter box on the house are so bad you can see the original colours on corners and at the rear - like they have just sploshed on a coat but not actually made it look tidy or done the rear of the pipe so you see white.

I really can't believe that that is an acceptable standard on a new house by so called professional painters.

I have not actually looked at the paint work inside the house and am dreading what I will find!

My advise is don't except it. Our house has the worse paint job, I had a Painter and Decorator come to the house today, to lay a feature wall of wallpaper to our Bedroom wall. He was visibly upset, by the paint finish to our home. He said that he knows the Australian Paint Standards and that ours were way out, of any standard that he knows of. The feature wall we had painted by the painters had to be covered by the wallpaper, he had to touch up the wall before painting it as you could see the red paint on the white walls on the sides and along the skirts, it had not been cut in properly. Our walls have not been sanded and cleaned up prior to splashing on the paint throughout the house. You can see white furry marks everywhere. We had the painters back about four times, then the handymen came in to have another go at it, omi. The ceiling is pathetic. We will be paying someone to fix it as our Builder thinks it's acceptable. Don't settle for anything your not happy with.

That is terrible. It sounds like they really did an awful job..

Thankyou. We definitely will not be accepting the paintwork we have seen.

It is so disappointing isn't it that they think they can just do it like that and no one will care - obviously in a lot of cases the builder doesn't care either.
