Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 03, 2011 2:37 pm Our house plan has a designated bedroom located about 4 meters away from our upright cooker (which is in an open plan kitchen/dining/living area. There is a (presumably) hard wired smoke alarm installed on the ceiling just outside the door. I believe there is a regulation requiring this. We don''t use this designated bedroom as a bedroom. It's a TV/play room, but I guess it's officially a bedroom as per our house plans. Whenever we cook meat on the stove top the alarm goes off and it's DRIVING US NUTS . We always have the extractor fan going at gale force, but to no avail. Anyone know if current regulations would allow us to disconnect it as we don't use that room for sleeping? Any electricians out there that might know? Re: smoke alarm goes off whenever we cook 2Mar 03, 2011 3:19 pm By law you cannot disconnect the smoke alarm. Perhaps you should look at a good quality rangehood? In generally most traditional ranges and extractor fans fight to get smoke and air out of kitchens as they have to suck the air up to the fan then push it out. I have also heard of some smoke alarms going off due to the aromas left in clothes tea towels left under smoke alarms. Apparently my sister in laws chefs uniform would set off the alarm if they were left in the laundry with the door open. The smoke alarm was almost straight above the laundry door. Re: smoke alarm goes off whenever we cook 3Mar 03, 2011 3:50 pm Hi, It sounds like the smoke detector needs to be replaced with a photoelectric type. If you see a radiation warning sticker inside your detector then it is an ionisation type - These are cheaper than photo-electric detectors and so they are the most common type that is installed, but as you have discovered they suffer from false alarming when installed near kitchens. If the unit is hard-wired to the 240V (which it will be in a new house) then you will need to get an electrician to come and replace it. If it is just battery powered then you can replace it yourself. Note that hard-wired units still contain a battery for backup. If you remove the battery and the detector chirps every minute or so then it is hard-wired. Paul Re: smoke alarm goes off whenever we cook 4Mar 03, 2011 3:57 pm Trinity, I'll swap you...neither of my smoke detectors work at all and nobody cares!! Builder just fobbed it off as did the sparky, btw both have their $$$'s so why would they care? I felt sure the council inspector would have checked things like that, but no! So I bought a smoke detector from the big green shed that will eventually go in the garage but for now it's near the bedroom so I can get out if there is a fire. Re: smoke alarm goes off whenever we cook 6Mar 04, 2011 11:36 am Trinity Thanks all! I'll be heading off tomorrow to find a 240v photoelectric type smoke alarm. Hi, Any electrical wholesalers should be able to sort you out. Paul I couldn't attached the photo for some reason. Here is the link to the photo https://pin.it/79jwdMp 1 3254 Get some long brass machine screws and bolt right through the gate and put brass acorn nuts and washers on the other side. It will never come off 1 9259 1 3164 |
