Post subject:  Renovations in Apartments are ANNOYING!

For the past 2 months, someone in our building has been carrying out what seems to be fairly extensive renovations. We think they're the top floor one along from us (we're the ground floor).

This is nothing more than gripe and vent, but it is SO annoying and tiring to be woken up every single day (including Sundays AND public holidays!!) at between 6.30am and 8am by loud banging, excrutiating drilling, tapping, and other such noises that disturb sleep and relaxation.

I understand they can't do this sort of thing quietly, but (1) WHY start at 6.30am!?!? (2) WHY do it on a Sunday at this ungodly hour AND on public holidays!? and (3) it is simply annoying to me that we residents of the building have to put up with this for so long, have our sleep and quality of life disturbed (even if only mildly), and then have absolutely nothing to show for it!!!

Does anyone actually know what the legal starting time for loud building works actually IS? I thought it was 8am on weekdays and 9am on weekends. I must be wrong though.

Thanks for listening! lol

I don't know the exact times, but it is definetly not 630am on a Sunday. Have just googled and found this for SA http://www.epa.sa.gov.au/pdfs/info_nois ... uction.pdf
It says no noise on a Sunday or public Holiday at all, and the rest is 7am to 7pm, but recommends not using jackhammers etc until after 9am. Good luck.

Ah HAH! No noise on Sunday or public holiday at all, eh? Well, I know for a fact that on Gold Coast Show Day (which is a public holiday here, but not everyone gets it. No retailers do for instance) they had a large truck with lots of broken / removed tiles and 3 men walking back and forth wearing bright yellow vests…and on that day, the noise (incredibly loud drilling that sounded as if it was coming straight through our wall. Our 2 cats were very disturbed by it) started just before 8am.

They’ve never started before 7.30am-ish on a Sunday. But some weekdays they begin just after 6.30am. It’s terrible cause (and this is no fault of anyone) I am often woken up around 5am (various reasons. Birds, light, partner snoring and once she gets up, noise from the shower, kitchen, etc) and cannot get back to sleep until my partner leaves for work around 6.50am, and the time following this used to be my quality sleep time before getting up for work at 8.15am. But not anymore. And I know that getting up for work at 8.15am is considered really late now, and I agree with this, but I find it ludicrous that I am going to bed about 11pm, getting up at 8.15am, so COULD be getting 9 hours sleep, but I’m only ever getting around 6 hours. *huff*

Thank you!!

It depends if your neighbourly noise is coming from building/construction works or general residential projects. 1800 637 000 is a GCCC noise reporting line.

Construction works are permitted 6.30am - 6.30pm Monday to Saturday only (unless an after-hours permit has been issued).

Residential noise (this can include power tools) is permitted 7am - 7pm Monday to Saturday and 8am to 7pm Sunday/Public holidays.

Go to bed a 9:00pm.

Problem solved, my invoice is in the mail.

LMAO, 9pm!? I think not, sir!

Yeah, I’d never actually complain, even if they were outside the approved hours, but I just find it appalling that 6.30am is the start time, even on SATURDAYS! Is nobody expected to sleep later than this?

Well, some people need the work and trades always start earlier in the day, that way they can finish a bit earlier.

I'm sure if it was your unit being renovated then you would want them to start as early as possible.

Our blokes in summer start at 6am, this is mainly due to the oporssive heat that they have to work in, as the afternoon is usually hotter.

Yeah, true. It gets SO hot around here, and up in Bris where you are.

6am? Ouch. I'm not a morning person, so in the past when we had our place painted it was done at 10am, when we had our carpet done it was at 8am (and this was pushing it for me). lol
