Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 02, 2023 6:42 pm I have a number of duragal house posts that have had varying degrees of dirt and small river rocks around them, and as such are showing some rust. In order to deal with this I am thinking of hitting the rust with a steel brush / angle grinder and then treating the remaining rust. I want to do something to prevent further rust forming, so was thinking of trying to raise the base of the existing concrete footing such that the house post is encased in concrete to a higher level than it is currently at and therefore limit exposure to any dirt. Is it possible to simply just mix up some concrete and place it over the existing concrete, or are there additional things I need to think about to make this effective? Is there anything else I should be doing to prevent any future rust? I assume the dirt has caused the majority of rust and having small river rocks around the posts isn’t actually going to contribute to the formation of further rust? Re: Preventing rust around steel house posts 2May 02, 2023 9:21 pm You’re on the right track, wire brush in a grinder then a zinc rich epoxy primer then a top coat of some sort, like a waterproofing membrane. Raising the concrete would also help. Even better is mobile sand blasting and 2 pac industrial zinc primer. Depends on how long you want it to last. if l cannot get a sandblaster would a sander with sandpaper be better then a wire brush 4 7483 That just protects from further rust, l want first to apply a rust converter or rust killer to kill the rust thats there, whats the best one for galvanized steel 2 7951 thanks, yes they are dry , thats a good idea with fish oil as sanding will be hard 4 2373 |
