Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 04, 2015 2:43 pm Hi I have been reading posts on the forum and wondered if we will have to use any special bricks etc when we get around to building our house. The land is in south Tasmania, and the Huon river is literally across the road, how far inland do we have to worry about salt and its effects? Should we have tiles or a color bond roof ? Cheers Lorri Re: Building next to estuary/ river 2May 04, 2015 3:17 pm Hi Lorri, sorry can't answer your question but looking forward to seeing your build!! I think you can check with Clb about the salt tolerance distance though....? Re: Building next to estuary/ river 5May 04, 2015 3:37 pm The only thing I can say from experience is that having lived 500m from the beach and having a clb roof it made no difference. There are clb roofs everywhere in Perth's newest beach suburbs. We needed extra brick ties for the strong sea breezes though!! Re: Building next to estuary/ river 7May 04, 2015 4:02 pm Lovely!! You will pick up all sorts of little bargains in Thailand for the decor if you have room in your suitcases... Re: Building next to estuary/ river 8May 04, 2015 4:40 pm Salt is mainly an issue in climates where you have the afternoon howling sea-breeze many afternoons bringing the mist of salt over the first few km of land each day. I used to live on the oceanfront on NSW coast where this would happen. There are grades of colorbond and fixings designed to handle this, but in practice it seems to manage fairly well anyhow. On the oceanfront, one of the problems with tile roofs was that the wind-driven rain would regularly blow up the roof and under the tiles. Colorbond tended to work better there, but you need to take care with the ridge cap sealing to keep the roof dry inside. Yes Trees, there are heaps of good things to buy here but banded from getting anything as we are borderline with luggage as is, got papers and important stuff in bags because we will be in the UK for a year or so first before we head back to Tassie .
